I like working with the Lens Flare in Motion better: Library, Generators, Lens Flare. For example, it adds an Add blend mode by default. The Streaks are better positioned. If you want a more serious lens flare I recommend getting a 3rd party plug-in. The FCP / Motion Lens Flare is limited in what it can do. As for the Streak Map, which is an image well that displays a thumbnail of the map chosen for the streaks of the lens flare. You can place the clip the lens flare is over in that well. It will change the pattern of the streaks and animate it based on what is in the clip, be careful using this. Take a look at the image below to show the difference.

You have it figured out. Duplicate the clip layer and drag the duplicate to the top. Add a mask to the legs. Key frame the control points and maybe jump every 5 frames or so and add another keyframe and move the control points around.
Motion can track the control points if you like but I’ve found it gets confused by the legs crossing back and forth and is easier to do the manual way. Speaking as a graphics guy who uses Motion and AE, it can be done in both programs. There is not a thing in that video that can’t be done in Motion. Plus, a clean design like that would play back in real time. Hope that is the type of information you are looking for. Plus, have fun working on that project.

Then it sounds like you can choose any preset and it will work for you. Here are the two presets I use the most:
XDCAM EX 1080p24 – Here is a Motion template I created with that preset. Watch the “Colorful Flourish Motion 4 Template”.
DVCPRO HD 1080i60 – Here is an animation created with that preset. It is a TV Show Open.
I think both of those presets are great and will look great. Hope this information is of help and best of luck.

There is or was a free gradient wipe plug-in that worked better then the one on FCP. I can’t remember where I found it. You may want to look for it.
Also, take a look at the video tutorial on gradient wipes by Richard Harrington.
