Are you saying you have HD footage in a NTSC DV timeline and everything looks good. But then when you burn it to a DVD and play it on a 16 x9 TV you get black on the top and bottom and left and right and you would like it to feel the whole screen with out any black?

Zack,
This is my work flow for getting layered Illustrator files in Photoshop to Motion.

Create images in Illustrator. Open your layers window if it is not already opened. Everything will be in one layer. Click on the “Create New Layers” button to create as many layers as you will need. Click on the disclosure’s triangle to see all of the sub layers in the main layer. Select the sub layer or sub layers that you want in its own layer and move it up on one of the new layers that you created. Do that for everything until everything that should be in its own layer is. Then go to File, Export. Choose Photoshop. Click on Export button. Be sure to make sure “Write Layers” is check so your content is transparent.

Bring into Photoshop if needs be. Make sure it is RGB. If a layer is in a group or something be sure to flatten it so it is just a layer, this can happen when you have multiple objects in one layer.

You can drag a photoshop document onto your project pane, timeline or canvas. Let is hover for a second and Motion will ask you if you want to import all of the layers. Then you can animate each layer independent of the others. And for my shameless plug. Working with AI files and PSD is covered in my Motion Training DVD. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Take a look at this video I did in Motion. I think it is very similar to what you are after.

The majority of the files where created in Illustrator. Because I animated each “layer” or object I exported the file to photoshop. I then imported the layered photoshop document into Motion where I could work with each layer. I don’t feel like I lost any quality by doing that. The times I choose to work with the vector image is when I’m zooming into an object so I don’t loose sharpness. But in the case of the video the size of the objects does not change a whole lot. Plus, the photoshop files export out of Motion faster.

Zak is right, he is worth listening to and is very knowledgeable.

I think AE and Motion are similar and what you learn in one can be transferred to the other. So you don’t lose anything by learning one or the other. I think a lot of Motion users use both Motion and AE. Depending on where you want to go with your new skill set I think you will find that AE is the more widely used application. I used Motion a lot more because I feel it is faster.

PS. All of those images can be built directly in Motion by the way.

I just finished work on a documentary, here is a link to the trailer for Boys of Bonneville. I’ve also done some 2k stuff for a theater. Both are different. Since you are shooting in HD and the final output is HD you workflow should be what you are used to. This question gets asked a lot in the Final Cut Pro forum. I recommend you check it out, unless you are asking about a motion graphics workflow with Motion. Not sure if I was any help. Best of luck.

If you are asking how to achieve this effect do this: Create a group. Place person and graphics in group. Then place other side person and graphics in group. Place both in one group. Make sure Anchor point is in the center of the group. Keyframe rotation of group. Change the rotation of back group so it lines up properly. Hope this helps and best of luck.
