Yes, Select the Shape. Hit F4 to open up the Shape tab. Under the Style tab change the “Fill Mode from Color to Gradient. Make both gradient colors the same. Above where the two colors are you will see a white square. That represents the opacity. To add another square click anywhere above the white rectangle. Then select one of the squares and changes its opacity. See image below:

To change the “Fixed Aspect Ratio” do the following: Open up the Project Pane. Click on the Media tab. Select the AI file. Click on the Inspector tab in the Inspector. Select the Media tab if it is not already selected. Un check the Fixed Resolution check box. Jaggy edges become smooth.
Also set your resolution to best.

We shot a group of people on our green screen. Then I used the replicator to make the crowd super big. With the stage built from scratch and other things the replicator really bogged down Motion. I ended up deleting the replicated crowd and just duplicating them and placing them only in areas that they would be seen during the camera move. I think this project pushed Motion to a braking point. So I had to come up with a few work arounds. I feel / hope the next version will have those problems worked out. All in all I’m happy I did it in Motion and felt it turned out great.

Happy to help. Keep in mind that you can make your PSD a whole lot bigger so when you zoom in you can maintain more quality.

The nice thing about an AI file is that it is vector so you can zoom in with no loss of quality. The problem in Motion with AI files is you can bring in layered files.
To import an illustrator file do the following: In Illustrator, save it as an Illustrator Document, make sure Create PDF Compatible File is checked. Import the file into Motion. Open up the Project Pane. Click on the Media Tab. Select the file. Uncheck Fixed Resolution and you should be golden. I only uncheck the Fixed Resolution check box when I’m done because once you do that Motion chugs. I don’t have a problem working with a crappy looking AI image in Motion until I’m ready to export. Hope this helps.

I agree with editing in HD. Then exporting out and letting compressor down convert it. It looks much better then letting FCP down convert the footage. FCP adds stair stepping. Best of luck.
