I have the same processor on one of my PC’s and I can assure you that it doesn’t have the power needed to preview HD. You are trying to preview in “Best/Full” which only the most powerful i7 or Xeon processors can handle. Scale back to “Draft” or “Automatic”. It won’t be pretty but it will work better.

Many things cause this, but most likely your PC just can’t keep up with the demands you are asking of it. Your preview quality may be set too high, or you may have F/X that the processor has to apply to every frame. There isn’t enough information to make a better guess. You may also want to consider using a proxy file to edit.

The way I handle this is to make a copy of all the video tracks after they are synched, but before making a multicam track. I then group, mute and minimize the duplicate tracks. I rarely need them, but sometimes it’s just nice to have them if I need to make a different cut later.
Nesting, to answer your other question, is when you put a .veg file on the timeline.

You won’t hear DialNorm changes in preview, it’s strictly a Dolby AC3 thing. But you said that you “…raised the DB and dialog normalization settings…”. I don’t know where you raised the DB, but the only one that matters to the encode is the Master. And DialNorm works intuitively backwards. Dialnorm controls the overall volume of the audio. Some feel that the default of -27dB the dialog audio is too low when compared to other DVD’s. It really depends on your content. Run a few tests and see for yourself. Try -31dB. If that’s too loud try -30dB.

Thanks Theo – so many options and this is one that i’ve never noticed because I’ve never needed it before now.
But, it doesn’t work. There are about a dozen .prproj files on the discs and after trying about four or five of them as imports, I keep getting various error messages. Index too large, invalid project, etc. I am guessing that the Premiere project is too complex for Vegas to import…

Yes and no.
For a free program, it is a really good replacement for Photoshop. In my limited use of GIMP, I would say it’s closer to Photoshop 3 in capabilities. You can open Photoshop PSD files, but you can’t save a PSD file.But no NLE recognizes the XCF files like they do Photoshop PSD files. You can use GIMP to prepare standard PNG or JPEG files which any NLE can handle.
Bummer because the price of Photoshop just keeps going up and GIMP is still free. I don’t plan to upgrade Photoshop from CS5 because CS5 does all that I want. I use Photoshop to make my DVD menus and if DVDA would recognize GIMP XCF layers like it does Photoshop PSD layers, then I would learn GIMP. But it won’t.

That works because they are events not clips. (If it’s on the timeline, it is an event). When you split an event you are not doing anything to the media, just making two events that have different in-out pointers to the media. when you drag the edge of an event on the timeline all you are doing is adjusting the in/out points.
