  • trying to edit 1080p 24fps footage video freezes or stutters

Ok here’s the deal. I shot a wedding with new cameras I purchased the new Cannon H10. I shot the wedding is 1080p at 24fps, as for the type of file it records to on the camera all I see is .MTS. Now this is really the first time I’m editing 1080p 24fps footage on Vegas, so I set the settings to HD 1080-24p (1920×1080, 23.976 fps) However 2 issues i’m running into. One is wit the scrubbing and editing the other is previewing the footage in the timeline. Whenever I try to scrub through the footage to find in and out points to edit the video freezes for a few seconds or stutters so it’s hard to really determine what part of the footage I want to edit. The same thing happens in the timeline, whenever I preview footage it freezes or stutters and when I use the dissolve effect between two different clips, forget about it. Are my settings incorrect? What are the best settings to use for 1080p 24fps footage? and are there settings in the preview screen I need to be aware of?

When I render the footage and burn to a DVD the playback is perfect, this is only happening during editing.

    I’m grateful for any help
    Thanks

Many things cause this, but most likely your PC just can’t keep up with the demands you are asking of it. Your preview quality may be set too high, or you may have F/X that the processor has to apply to every frame. There isn’t enough information to make a better guess. You may also want to consider using a proxy file to edit.

My comp should be able to handle HD footage just fine… I have provided my comp specs below, alnog with the settings I have Vegas set at. Maybe something under the preview settings, or the video settings need to be changed? Someone told me to try changing the Dynamic RAM .. but not sure where to set it to… Any further help is appreciated and if you need any more info please let me know.

I have the same processor on one of my PC’s and I can assure you that it doesn’t have the power needed to preview HD. You are trying to preview in “Best/Full” which only the most powerful i7 or Xeon processors can handle. Scale back to “Draft” or “Automatic”. It won’t be pretty but it will work better.

Stephen is right- your computer isn’t powerful enough, which is why you’re getting the stuttering & freezing. That processor might be fine enough for lower-quality HD footage (ie- footage below 24 mb/s), but high-quality 1080 footage is taxing your hardware.

Sorry to say, but it’s time to upgrade to an Intel Ivy Bridge processor and Z77 chipset motherboard. With today’s memory prices, i’d get 16gb of RAM minimum. Plus, you never stated what type of drive(s) your video footage is residing on.
