  • Horrible 360p quality compared to other YouTube users

Posted by Richie Dcosta on April 1, 2013 at 9:22 pm

I’ve just upgraded to a canon 600D (t3i) because my previous camera wasn’t improving on quality when I upload it to YouTube.
Before I purchased the camera I’ve looked at reviews and tests on YouTube, the quality was amazing, here’s an example of what I was expecting:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqVpgTCFdeA

The quality still looks as if it’s playing on 1080p when its really
playing at 360p and switching to 1080p just makes it even better!

I know the description says that it’s raw footage straight from the camera but here is another example from the same camera and has been edited with:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfLpg4vzjVA

In 360p it’s still in good quality compared to mine.
Unfortunately I don’t have an example as of now,
I removed it and deleted the files and gave up after several attempts with 5-10 different formats and some of them rendered without audio, which is my second problem!

Anyways if it helps my footage looks grainy when uploaded to youtube playing at 360p by default, I was wondering if there is anyway I can adjust the settings I have on vegas to help youtube compress my video down to 360p a little better. Many users on YouTube usually don’t bother clicking the little crank button on the bottom right and clicking 1080p. They just watch the video and go about their day.

Also it’s very frustrating looking at peoples video who have the same camera as me with way better results. I feel like I’ve spent all this money on my new camera and equipment for grainy looking videos.

And yes I do render all my videos just for YouTube and in some cases Vimeo(which is not the problem), I do not render for CDs/DVDs/etc.

    I’m using:
    Sony vegas pro 11.0

    Here’s my project settings

Here is where i don’t know what to use!
I’ve ticked in match media settings and it narrowed down to
these options. I’ve tried almost every one of them, and also
tried messing with the render settings by clicking custom.

    I recorded in:
    1920×1080 30fps 1080p

Each format that I’ve tried, I have a problem with, for example when I tried to render using Sony MXF the audio didn’t render, and i realized that YouTube doesn’t support .mxf files!

I’ve tried MainConcept MPEG-2 and the audio doesn’t also render!

I’ve googled and googled all day trying to find answers and found out that mp4 extension is probably the best extension to go for with YouTube, but everytime I try to render it, I don’t get sound. I’ve never had this problem before, I tried using Internet HD 720p (downsizing from 1080p) and the sound rendered out perfectly fine, but than when I upload it to youtube the quality is all grainy.

I’ve also tried Internet HD 1080p but sony vegas won’t even bother rendering it at all, I get a error message.

So briefly what I’m saying is,

How do I get good quality on 360p like the previous YouTube Videos I’ve showed?

    and

How do I fix the audio problem when I render in certain formats?

Im confused why your using the bluray interlaced render option when your videos are going to youtube.

Use the mainconcert AVC options, 1080p30 or 720p30
if you want to improve render quality use 2 pass and/or raise the average bitrate renedered

It would be nice to see an example of the problem video. It *may* be something you did in shooting the footage.

I wasn’t actually using the bluray interlaced render option it just happen to be selected when i took a screen shot.

Anyways about using 2 pass, what does that exactly do? Sorry I’m not very experienced with sony vegas yet.

Also what average bitrate do you recommend?
Just max it out all the way or what?

Annnnd… if you don’t mind me asking what
is bitrate and how does it interfere with the quality?

    Stephan Mann,
I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the way i shot the footage, the area was well lit and held steady with a tripod in some shots.

On the Sony Vegas preview, the video looks marvelously clear!
So clear it hurts my eyes.

But uploading to YouTube is where the quality gets killed.
I mean i’m not expecting it to be as clear as it plays on my computer but YouTube just degrades it so much that it’s not satisfying to watch and I’ve seen better results with other people, it feels like i’m the unlucky one here! Lol.

Just need help finding out the right format.
I’ve recorded it as .mov just like any other dslr it outputs it’s files as mov.
I’m assuming .mp4 is the best way to go since vegas 11 doesn’t offer .mov extension. Need help with render settings that can boost the quality for YouTube playback.

I’m pretty sure it’s a mistake to jump in here but I don’t think “figure it out yourself” is what this forum is all about.
I’ve been working with Vegas for years and I’m still confused at times. It’s not always easy to explain what is going wrong. That’s why people ask and do their best in at least trying to explain.

I hope this doesn’t start any big discussion on manners. Please…

Use either of the starred MainConcept templates as shown below.

[Richie Dcosta] “Anyways about using 2 pass, what does that exactly do? Sorry I’m not very experienced with sony vegas yet.”

Using 2 Pass will make better use of the available bit-rate by making a 1st pass that calculates how many bits each frame needs and then it creates a bit allocation plan and makes a 2nd pass that encodes the frames using the plan. This produces higher quality results at lower bit-rates because it uses the bits where they are needed the most without wasting any.

As Mike said use MainConcept AVC/AAC with the Internet HD 1080p template. This produces high quality output and holds up well when YouTube re-encodes it.
