There’s some validity to the theory of powering down hard disks when not in use.

The only drives which should never be turned off are server-rated – and probably more expensive than you would like to pay.

The drives that most of us use are rated for an 8-hour duty cycle.

Steve Gibson, author of Spinrite, writes everything in assembler language and bypasses everything Windows. His programs are tiny and WOW! fast. However, avoiding everything Windows means no Windows drivers, no Firewire and no USB. The program talks directly to the hardware ports and even bypasses the BIOS in most cases.

The only way that you will be able to Spinrite your disc is for it to be installed in a PC and connected to the IDE bus.

I’m not clear what you are doing, but could you be trying to import the media file into a menu button and exceeding the 1Gb menu limit?

Player, VTR, VCR, they are all the same on the TRV series. I have a TRV-10 and says VTR on the switch.

Sounds like you have windows set to the default file view. (I call it the Mac User mode). In any IE window, go to tools, folder options, view and uncheck the “hide extensions for known filetypes”. In the folder with the IFO files, make a copy (ctrl C then ctrl V, highlight the copy and hit f2 to rename it.

BUP means Backup. It’s an exact copy of the .IFO file, but with a .BUP suffix.

I’ve never run into this problem, but maybe you can make your own BUP file?

February 9, 2006 at 8:35 am in reply to: DVDA, why can’t I burn a 4.61 GB file?

The disk manufacturers will have to start explaining themselves better because when people start installing 500Gb drives and only seeing a little over 400Gb after formatting, they are going to hear from them. Maybe they should start putting the approximate *formatted* drive size on the box?

Go to the control panel, System, Device Manager. Double click on the drive to bring up the drive properties, click on the “policies” tab and make sure that “write caching” is off.

The original question doesn’t provide a lot of detail, but the first sentence could be a clue that the usr is trying to render to a FAT partition and not NTFS.

Subtitles are a DVD option. Are you thinking of captioning? Vegas only supports captioning in WMV files.

Look at page 223 in the manual for tips on how to add captions to a WMV project..
