  • Missing .BUP file – Cannot burn DVD

    Hi, I’m doing something wrong.
I can use DVDA to create and save a Project as PREPARED VIDEO_TS plus AUDIO_TS, and also save its DAR file. Then, launching DVDA and selecting the DAR file I can burn the Project again onto a DVD disk.
But if the DAR file is missing, I have tried to use DVDA to burn the Project, just using the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS files.
I have tried launching DVDA, selecting File/Make DVD/Burn. The selection comes up to “Use previously prepared Project.”
I navigate to the folder where the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS have been saved, select that folder (that contains both) and then…up comes a notice:
” The selected folder is not valid.
A valid prepared DVD folder must contain VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders,
and the VIDEO_TS folder must contain the files VIDEO_TS.IFO and VIDEO_TS.BUP.”

At this point, the process does not proceed.

I check the contents of the VIDEO_TS and its contents are:
    VTS_01_0 28 KB IFO File
    VTS_01_1.VOB 1,024,000 KB VOB File
    VTS_01_2.VOB 182,692 KB VOB File
Note there is no “VIDEO_TS.BUP” whatever that is. I checked and it appears to be missing on several Projects done over a year ago, using an older version of DVDA (I think #1). Projects done this year seem to have the .BUP file.
So am I doing something wrong? Is this missing file recoverable? Can DVDA burn the DVD without it? Can any other software (say, NERO) burn a DVD without it?
    Some help would be appreciated.
    Thank you in advance,
    John

I use DVDA to burn from a folder all the time without the DAR file. However, my Video_TS folders DO have a bup file. Sounds like you’re doing things right. I would definitely try Nero or Record Now to burn the DVD.

BUP means Backup. It’s an exact copy of the .IFO file, but with a .BUP suffix.

I’ve never run into this problem, but maybe you can make your own BUP file?

    Thank you, Steve
I tried your excellent idea, by copying the IFO files to another folder, but there was no way (that I know) to change them from IFO files to BUP files (and then bring them back into the folder from which they were missing). I could not find a way to “see” the IFO files as: “xxx.IFO” that could then be changed to “xxx.BUP”.
A thought: Is it possible that some well-intended “cleanup” program wiped any and all “backup files” in the PC? If so, this could be a serious problem down the road for many of us.

Sounds like you have windows set to the default file view. (I call it the Mac User mode). In any IE window, go to tools, folder options, view and uncheck the “hide extensions for known filetypes”. In the folder with the IFO files, make a copy (ctrl C then ctrl V, highlight the copy and hit f2 to rename it.

Thank you Steve. I followed your suggestions and was able to create .BUP files in the proper folder. “Record Now” which was bundled with my HP burner, did not like the results, and came up with an error message. NERO was able to burn satisfactorily (although it’s possible it could have done it without the .BUP.)
Now I am trying to figure out the chain of commands for DVDA that would accept a set of ready-created AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS files and burn a DVD (when there was no DAR saved). So far I haven’t been successful. It must be something simple…

    Just a follow-up.
After I inserted the “concocted” .BUP file, I used DVDA to burn a DVD. At the beginning of the process, an error message came up, but I bypassed it and it burned the DVD anyway. I was able to play the DVD successfully.
    Thanks, again!
