All my cameras are HDV, 16:9, and all of my delivery DVD’s are widescreen. Shoot and edit in the highest resolution available and only downscale when you make the MPEG file for the DVD.

I don’t know if it’s the “right” way, but I would just mark a region and render it in an uncompressed format. But if saving space is your goal, buy a larger hard disk because an uncompressed file will be huge. Anything else will compromise your video quality.

What is the problem with subclips? You can have thousands of subclips and each of them can be in hundreds of events, I exaggerate but the point is that there is only one copy of the source media no matter how many times it’s referenced by events on the timeline.

That doesn’t mean anything. You can select from more than one codec in the Vegas “render as” templates. If Vegas can’t open a video file, it usually means that the needed codec has not been installed on the PC.

Get the free program “Mediainfo” and see what codec was used to make the video file. then install that codec on your PC.

DO NOT INSTALL A CODEC PACK.

For what it’s worth, Microcenter has Barracuda 2TB drives on sale for $109 through Monday.

I have about ten Barracuda drives in use here, some 1TB and some 2TB, and haven’t had a drive failure in ten years. (Every project gets it’s own drive and I just drop the drive into the external docking station and edit).

You can probably do it with the legacy text generator, or any titler program. You just have more “artistic” capability using Photoshop.

No, but you can make Windows think any drive is whatever drive letter you specify.

Here’s a batch file that I wrote that makes your external drive look like drive B to Windows.

4293_makedriveb.bat.zip

Just put the batch file on the external drive, run it once and the external drive is drive B no matter what Windows mounted it as. You can edit the batch file to make your external drive any drive letter you want. Just don’t make it drive C or Windows will stop working.
