  • Why Not Render Standard DV To Widescreen?

Posted by Ken Fisher on June 22, 2012 at 10:13 pm

For a very long time I’ve been struggling with the pixelation issues when viewing my work on a PC monitor. Sure, it’s not perfect science but I’m not ready to invest in a real production monitor.

The goal is to eventually produce some in depth how to dvd’s that deal with hardwood flooring installation. Yep, that’s my forte. I’ve seen the competition and have never been pleased with the resolution on both PC and wide screen TV, not to mention lighting.

So with my constant tinkering I pulled out a dvd I did two years ago as a test. Widescreen was written on it. It looked a whole lot better than rendering to standard DV format in Vegas. No more annoying pixelation.

Does anything sound unusual about going this route? I think people would prefer better resolution over a stretched out video. Maybe I’m missing something here?

    Thanks

All my cameras are HDV, 16:9, and all of my delivery DVD’s are widescreen. Shoot and edit in the highest resolution available and only downscale when you make the MPEG file for the DVD.

Im reading this and it makes sense but which is better to burn your wide screen production in dvd letterbox or nonletterbox and why?

Great confirmation John. I suppose my recent notes were wrong in so far as project properties and rendering properties. I think I was stuck on “matching all properties, unaltered” that included the rendering process. So in my case it looks like the following scenario works better for achieving better quality on playback using a standard definition source:

I’ve seen this discussed over and over again so I apologize for the repetition. I’d really like to get past this. It doesn’t create a letterbox per se, more of a rectangle…

    Non-letterbox.
    Why?
When is the last time you saw a TV that was not widescreen?

It should also be pointed out that it is NOT your job to letterbox; that’s the job of the DVD Player. You should always deliver widescreen and let the device figure out what’s the best way to display it on the TV.

Burning in letterbox should only be used in rare cases when you know the video will be displayed in 4:3 because of equipment limitations (i.e., you are using a projector on a PC that is 4:3 and can’t handle widescreen).

OK so now I’m really confused. It looks like you want to Pillarbox not Letterbox. You are shooting SD 4:3 and you don’t want it to stretch out on a 16:9 screen? If this is correct, then your settings above are what you want to use. It will give you black bars on either side (which is called pillarbox because the black bars look like vertical pillars)

So for the average “Joes” like me shud I check the box under “Make Move” that says “Stretch video to fill output frame size (do not letterbox)”??
