There is something to what Kelly said.
I’m pretty happy with the two Dell Ultrasharp monitors (24″ and 23″) I just bought at discount. They look identical, and aside from not having auto-brightness with that High End Spyder, what I see on them looks like what my eye remembered when I shot the footage.
Every time I go through those manual calibration steps (such as the one that comes with Photoshop) where they have you squint at the colored circles and patterns and adjust until everything merges, when I am done it looks like crap …
Now, as far as how the BluRay’s look on various TVs – I go to several friend’s houses and play them. Where it looks crappy, they usually have the TV horribly mis-adjusted, and I help them fix it …

[John Rofrano] “Try setting it to Preview (Auto) and that should help.”
Wow – this actually helped me. I’m surprised! On the “red car” test project it resulted in giving me nearly 29.97 throughout the entire video. This was a big improvement over using Good (quarter), and it was not terribly blurry.
[John Rofrano] “Also make sure that your project settings match the footage settings. Having the project set wrong will cause the footage to be interpreted on-the-fly which may slow things down.”
Sure … but what do I do when the project has mixed footage? For example, my current project has 1080 60i, 1080 30p and 1080 60p, plus a bunch of AVI stuff rendered with HuffYUV and VirtualDubx64.
So confused …

February 9, 2014 at 6:32 am in reply to: Sony Vegas 12 -Property Window Not Displaying Full Size[John Rofrano] “I would contact Sony.”
John, I’m wondering if I am the only one who has difficulty getting Sony to respond in a timely manner. My idea of “contact Sony” is to open a support ticket. Back in 2012 they took over 5 weeks to respond, and then the response was to ask me a question that, if they had just READ the statement of the problem, was clearly spelled out.
I currently have two tickets open; one for the HSL clipping/posterization and the other for the problem with Google+ & YouTube breaking “upload to youtube”. Both were created on Jan 30.
Is there a better way to report a bug?
Thanks,
Steve

I’m tending to agree with Steve R. regarding render & patiently waiting. But one thing I do need and want is fast real-time preview at reasonably good resolution. Wondering … can I get that with fast CPU?

February 5, 2014 at 4:34 am in reply to: Movie Studio Platinum 12 corrupting all my footage.Ivan, I second Steve R.’s suggestion.
First get at least one of these (or similar from another manufacturer, not endorsing this one, in fact I have a different brand):
https://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-5-0Gbps-Docking-Station-ST0019U/dp/B003ZUXXVU
Hook it up to a SATA port on your computer.
Then grab one of these to stick in it – the hybrid drives are almost as fast without the SSD cost:
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178381
Put all your source media on it, when rendering, send the file to a drive other than it.

Hi All;
As I continue to struggle with optimizing my system, I am realizing that chasing GPU-assist might not be really worth all the headaches.
For example, “Upload to Youtube” does not use my GPU at all. But, I get 3x faster render on the same project using CUDA (I have a Quadro 2000 and an Xeon 5606).
I often render projects that are a mix of Sony mt2s, Panny 50 h.264 .mov and .avi produced with HuffYUV and veeDub64. Depending on the source file, I might see GPU at 80% or close to zero.
I’m starting to shop around for a new mombo. This time I am going to be picky and get it right.

Jason, forgive me for hijacking your thread, something John said is of great interest to me.
[John Rofrano] “The video that told you to use Sony AVC for internet delivery was old and outdated for Vegas Pro 12.0. Previous version of Vegas Pro had templates under Sony AVC but Vegas Pro 12.0 now uses MainConcept AVC with the Internet HD 1080p template for Internet delivery. That’s all you need to use. No customizations needed.”
Interesting, John. I’ve been trying both the MainConcept and Sony AVC and testing to YT. Also comparing the “Upload to YT”. I confess, I don’t like the results I’m getting with any of them.
Norman had mentioned something about setting the frame rate to exactly 30 fps (by typing it in). I’d appreciate your thoughts on that.
Also, do you know if the SVP12 “Upload to YT” using the Sony AVC or MainConcept AVC, and what settings are used?
Here’s a very rough draft of the first 3 min of an 18 minute project I have been working on for a while. This was was rendered with the MainConcept AVC. It has a mixture of 60i and 60p footage, along with a smattering of .avi stuff that has been processed with VeeDub64 for time-lapse.

[Norman Black] “Better yet, encode your video at exactly 30fps. The drop down does not list an exact 30fps but you can enter a value into the field.”
Norman, this is fascinating.
I have been frustrated for many years as to why my videos on YT have bad motion distortion of many kinds – ghosting, tearing, etc. Also happens to some extent on Vimeo. But, many “pro” videos, particularly movie trailers, seem to not exhibit the problem.
I know that there are many facets to “perfect” YT quality, but I have always rendered at 29.97 . I’ll have to try setting it to 30 – but is this a good idea when the source footage is 29.97?
Also, do you know if the “Upload to Youtube” renders at 30?
BTW, still no response from Sony on that bug with Google+ pages breaking the Upload to YT. I just opened a support ticket for that – is there another way to file an actual bug report?
