    Ok, more has been revealed …

    As I played with things with Quantize off or on, I noticed that when Quantize was off, the timeline cursor was free to move anywhere … regardless of being on an actual frame boundary (as defined by the frame markers in on the timeline). With Quantize on, the timeline cursor would always be on a frame boundary (to see this you have to zoom in a lot).

    Then I noticed that my video event’s little frame-tic markers did not line up with the timeline frame markers! Going back to the left toward the start of the project, I found where things got out of alignment – I had time-compressed an event to speed it up (via ctrl-drag). This had apparently caused the right edge of that event to no longer be aligned with the project frame markers in the timeline. (this even though Quantize had been on during the drag).

    So, I turned off Quantize, and with a lot of zoom, carefully aligned the events so that the event time-tic frame markers lined up with the timeline frame markers. Turned Quantize back on, and lo and behold, the Kiss of Frame Death problem went away!

    I am still mightily confused about all this. Is there a Pro in the house? I can see how the Kiss problem could appear randomly in my projects, because I am fond of doing event time squeeze/stretch. Just would like to know if there is a way to keep event frames in synch with project frame/time. Not sure of the terminology here …

    I found the setting! It is “Quantize to Frames” ; when on, it causes the Kiss of Fade Death.

    Ok… so WHY does quantize to frames cause this? John? Help …

    Hi Brad;

    Yeah, I really wanted the NX70 to be the “one”. I actually bought and tested three of them, hoping to get lucky! The last one I kept waaay past the B&H return window. I had learned to live with the problems of CA and fringing. But I discovered too late that it had problems with inconsistent edge focus; had a critical orchestra shoot ruined. To make things worse I had cut out the bar code proof of purchase on the box and sent it in for the free battery and charger.

    I’m very pleased that after working with B&H and Sony for about three weeks they agreed to a full refund! I sent everything back + the rebate stuff. I was very, very happy. B&H has won me as a customer for life. I *highly* recommend B&H.

    Still looking for a cam, kind of bummed. The NX70 was actually a better cam than that Panny AC160 I just sent back – HORRIBLE zoom servo noise and vignetting. Yuk!

    Here is the best stuff I shot with the NX70. All the slow-mo parts at the end are from the NX70 – loved that PS mode! About half was shot with the trusty CX550V, half with the NX70. (you can tell the difference in that the CX550V stuff is crisper at the edges). Watch in 1080 mode if your connection is fast enough!

    Paul, have you tried build 683 yet?

    Sorry if I missed your answer to this – does it matter what your target format is on the render … AVI vs mp4, etc ?

    Make sure you have not done something with the Video FX button … this has burned me before:

    Also, watch for sill things like having the track turned off … (The little universal “no” symbol button)

    This is very interesting.

    For a long time I has been using the 32-bit floating point in SVP10, just because I was obsessing on what I thought would be the best possible quality. But, after learning many things about cameras in the past six months during my hair-ripping search for a cam, I came to realize that I can’t see any difference between 8-bit and floating point. Heck, I can barely see the difference between the 4:2:0 color space and the 4:2:2, in the Zacuto shoot-out tests (it is there, don’t get me wrong, but it is subtle for most of my purposes)

    8-bit projects render a lot faster …

  • Thanks John, I’ll consider Ultimate. After all, I would be able to get tech support from you here on the Cow …. heh 😉

    Right now I’m pretty happy just finally using that ripple thing … it is way better than what I was doing before!

  • Hi;

    These might give you some ideas regarding Google Maps/ Google Earth.

    A fly-in (most of the video is probably boring but watch the first part for the fly-in)

    A moving-map car to accompany a time-lapse drive (map starts at about 0:37 , but the first part is not horrible, so just watch)

    May 4, 2012 at 6:00 pm in reply to: My NX5U arrived yesterday, testing like crazy

    Hi John;

    You know, that is not a bad idea. It would have to be mostly text, because I did not save all my footage from all the cams. I’ll work on it, but it will be a while.

    I’m just sad because it looks like I’ll beheading into the summer without my new cam. I really wanted to do some two cam shoots of the final concerts of the EPSYOs next weekend, my daughter’s graduation, etc.

  • Wow Dave …

    The more I read your posts the more I’ve come to suspect you make your living in IT, not in Video – am I right?

    What you said about cores makes me wonder about something, the mapping between threads and cores. I’ve always left my “threads” in Vegas at the max, 16, but perhaps this is not wise.

    I have what seems to be a four-core system – at least, utilities like Process Explorer show four cores and four graphs for CPU utilization. Does it do any good to spawn more threads than there are cores to handle them without task-switching?
