Uh-oh … something new I was unaware of. Norman, are you saying that the CPU-only renders result in a higher quality than the GPU-assisted renders? Because that would bug me, I would be rendering multiple times, playing back, looking for subtle differences.

Well, the TigerDirect store did not have any AMD HD 6970’s in stock – perhaps a good thing before I shell out nearly $400.00 for a card to replace my nVidia Quadro 2000.

So confused … just tired of waiting forever for renders to finish and not being able to preview at full speed.

My friend’s computer was tied up in a massive 8 hour render for a client project, so we could not do the benchmark. Monday looks better for that.

Still wondering about the various OEM cards for AMD and nVidia. At the store, I see MSI AMD cards, Galaxy and EVGA GeForce cards, etc. Should I be worried about buying a VisionTek AMD 6970?

I might try the express, get my main Ultrasharp calibrated, and then just eyeball the second crappy monitor – which is old and dying and looks yelowish anyway. I don’t use it for anything other than general preview on 2nd monitor stuff, not for color or levels.

I really appreciate your taking the time to contribute to this thread. I know it is not a small thing to fiddle with benchmarks. Your times make me envious … but I knew my “new” system is actually 2+ year old tech. I’m somewhat hopeful that a new vid card will help SVP12 a lot.

Question: what about shelling out for a second Xeon? That would give me 8 physical cores – worth it for Vegas?

I’m heading over to a friend’s house this afternoon who is a professional video producer, he works for a local TV station and has a business on the side doing weddings, concerts, ads, etc. He recently built a new computer, not sure of the exact specs, but he has a GTX 650. I’m going to run the benchmarks and see what I get.

BTW, the new Corsair Neutron SSD for my C drive, much to my surprise, improved the SVP12 render time bit, but not the SVP11. The MainConcept render, which was 3:22, went down to 3:11 . Scratching my head over that one.

I’ll have the spec’s of my friends system and the results later tonight.

That screen shot looks really cool. I heard that the new Mac Pro (is it out yet) will be very fast.

Regarding the Quadro driver differences, I clicked on the little Help link on the driver download page and saw this:

* Quadro Graphics Driver – Official release driver for Quadro and ISV certification support to all ISVs, OEMs and End Users.

* Quadro Performance Driver – The driver released ahead of “Quadro Graphics Driver” from each major release to support the need of Press performance evaluation on Quadro.

* Quadro Partner Certified Driver – All drivers certified by our ISVs partners.

So I guess if I am feeling frisky I’ll try the Performance Driver.

One thing to keep in mind – the YT/Vimeo player does not just darken the vids, it also will raise the whites up to super-white and blow them out. Use your scopes to see that.

But thanks most of all for “Sleepwalking in the Rift” – reminds me of why we all do this stuff! I really, really liked it. The transitions, the way each shot and the pans guided my eyes to the next, the pacing, the music, everything … I showed it to my 19 year old daughter who just announced her engagement. She was transfixed.

heh – guess that was one of your “expensed” items … too steep for me.

What do I use?

Various test patterns in a dark room while I fiddle with brightness, contrast, color and gamma. Then after I finish, and the photos and videos look like crap, I re-adjust until things look like the way I remember they looked to my eye – and leave it like that for a while until I am bugged by some kind of a post on Studio RGB vs Computer RGB, then the entire cycle repeats.

I really appreciate your thoughtful and detailed reply. Based on that, when I have that test K4000, I think I will go to the trouble of swapping out the 2000 and seeing how the K4000 does.

You will be getting a Mac Pro? Will you dual-boot to run Vegas in Windows, or are you giving up on Vegas? Say it isn’t so!

One more specific question – on the nVidia site, they have several different drivers for the Quadro – Performance, some others. Any recommendations?

Finally, have a look at my new thread on SVP12 slower than SVP11. Would love your thoughts on that puzzler.
