    Thanks for your interest.

    Let me ‘splain something about my “new” computer. It was an end-of-sale Dell T7500 clearance priced to sell back in Nov. 2012. It sat in its box in my garage for more than a year until Dec 2013. I had no time for video fun last year because my wife had been very ill, nearly died, but the surgeons fixed her up; she is now disabled and can’t drive or walk much, but is happy and able to eat food again – yaay!

    So, I finally set it up last month. “New” to me, but old in Internet time, as will be evidenced by the specs below.

    I really appreciate your taking the time to reply; I’m looking to speed it up without buying a new system – I am hoping John will comment on Quadro 2000 vs Quadro 4000 because I might be able to get a K4000 cheap.

    Tonight I replaced my WD Blue 500 GB c: drive (cloned it) with a new Corsair Neutron 480GB GTX. I know this won’t help Vegas but man! Talk about fast boot and program loads. It is freaky fast.

  • Hi Norman;

    During CPU only render with Mainconcept, there was GPU activity. In fact, during the 1st run after it was done and I looked, I thought I had specified some kind of GPU assist, and was surprised to see that I had three choices and it had defaulted to CPU only. My second screen shot in the original post showed that GPU activity when CPU only was selected in the render template.

    So, I thought “well, I should get better numbers with OpenCL selected, after all OpenCL is hot stuff.” So, I was very puzzled that it ran slower and showed less GPU than with CPU only!

    When you said “…The Vegas video composite and effects engine always uses OpenCL for both AMD and NVidia.” , do you mean during preview or render?

    Ken, I do a lot of that, no problems.

    My interlaced cam is a Sony HDR-CX550V . I typically shoot in 1920×1080 60i. I make DVDs and Blu-Rays from the footage. No jaggies, just a nice motion blur. The defaults seem to work pretty good.

    Hope this helps, you can always play with Interpolate vs Blend and see what you like best.

    Yeah I’ve had the same frustration with pitch shift. Would love to know how. I split it and apply the effects to each little event.

    It would be cool if it worked like Levels, where you can double-click on the little levels line and add an “anchor” and then slide up and down.

    I’m still struggling to “calibrate” my new Dell Ultrasharp, so right now I have no idea what I am seeing 😉

    But John is right, stupid YT “stretches” the levels. If you have anything between 0 and 16, or between 235 and 255, it will be crushed/blown out.

    Does anyone know if Vimeo does the same? I forget, and am too lazy to test ;b

    The real money shot is how it looks after you upload to YT (or burn the DVD/BluRay and play it on the TV).

  • Well I completed the tests using the Sony Vegas “Mercedes” benchmark project.

    I’m starting a new thread for those results and the problems I discovered. All I will say about that here is I am very disturbed!

    John, still hoping you will commend on the Quadro 2000 vs K4000 question I posted before.

    I really appreciate the time you and others take to read my posts and reply in such detail.

    I hope to do the Vegas rendering project test tonight, I have the files, just need to set them up. I will also do some GPU-off tests.

    When you wrote: ” The OpenGL system actually runs a compiler — Vegas sends a higher level description of the problem to your nVidia OpenGL system.”, did you mean OpenCL?

    Thanks for the assurance that Vegas is using OpenCL even though that is not explicitly stated anywhere.

    Stand by for more results, and thanks again for keeping alive a thread that is getting old.

    I hope John replies with his thoughts on the Quadro 2000 vs K4000 question. Although in a few weeks I will have a chance to test, it would mean ripping out the 2000, replacing with the K4000, installing drivers and all that. When I have to return the card I will have to undo all that, makes me nervous.

    My Corsair Neutron GTX 480GB SSD drive will be here on Friday – hopefully the clone of the existing C: drive ( a WD Blue 500GB) will go well. After that I plan to use the WD in an external bay for periodic GHOST disk-disk clone backups of the C: drive.

    OK, I completed the 1st render & upload using the https://www.schuch.net B&W test pattern.

    The 1st 30 sec of the video has the Sony Computer RGB to Studio RGB level applied. The last 30 sec has no levels applied. When using the RGB parade scope, I see exactly what I would expect – with the levels FX applied, the scope shows everything between 16 and 235:

    With no Levels FX, the values stretch to 0-255:

    But when viewing the final product from YT, it looks different from both my preview in Vegas and the preview in the 2nd monitor. Not sure what to think, comments welcome.

    The test patten made me realize that my monitors on the new computer are not calibrated – I can drag the image from one to another and it looks different! ;p .

    Thanks Norman for the very clear and understandable review of this … I don’t know how many times I have understood this and then forgotten!

    A long time ago in a version far away ( i.e. about 2 years ago ;-p ) I went hog-wild and did a bunch of test renders, with various footage, with and without the computer RGB to Studio RGB levels thing on, and then uploaded to TY and viewed the results.

    I have a clear but possibly false memory that the results were somehow unexpected, hence my desire to repeat the test with SVP 12.
