January 26, 2014 at 3:23 am in reply to: Is this lack of difference in CPU vs GPU-enabled render speed a case of the dreaded Kepler chip thing?Ok, as per Dave’s suggestion, did some “red car” tests with SVP12.770. These were on my slow T7500, not Ozzie’s faster AMD. In Preferences, Video Tab, tried various renders with GPU acceleration set to either off, or to Nvidia Quadro 2000. Each time I switched it off or on I would restart Vegas as required.
What is interesting is that the GPU Acceleration setting DOES affect not only preview performance but also the way renders work, with both the Sony AVC and MainConcept AVC encoder.
As expected, video preview is horrible with it off. In region 5 of the “red car” at Good Half I was getting a measly 5 fps. With GPU Acceleration on, I would get about 19 fps in region 5.
Sony AVC, with GPU off, but selecting “use GPU if available”, used a bit of GPU, but way, way less than with GPU on. Render time was over 5 minutes; I stopped the test due to boredom.
Sony AVC, with GPU on and selecting “use GPU if available” used the GPU quite a bit; render time was 3:27.
Main Concept, with GPU off, rendering using OpenCL used zero GPU. I did not bother letting the test complete – it would have been over 8 minutes.
Main Concept, with GPU off, rendering using CUDA, was better: 4:47 and the GPU was used a bit.
Main Concept, with GPU on, rendering using CUDA, give me the fastest render, 3:11 this time ( I hit 3:09 a few days ago).

CUDA compute capability support only up to 1.3 (excludes certain GeForce 8800 models – GTS, Ultra. Compute capability 1.0 works in general for encoding, but has known issues. Boards with Kepler architecture are not supported.

Vegas only uses OpenCL internally. That setting is only for Vegas’ own use: compositing, etc. That setting is passed on to plug-ins that know OpenCL…That’s why I was suggesting a test render with/without the Vegas preference setting… try a CPU-only Main Concept render, that’ll give you more information about whether OpenCL is helping you or not with the Kepler card.”
Roger Wilco, thanks for the clarification. Very enlightening and interesting. It will be a while before I can go over to Ozzie’s house to try that, please stand by.
I’ll do some tests tonight on my Quadro 2000 system just for grins. My preview performance is pretty horrible with GPU enabled; I expect it will get worse. Ozzie’s is great with GPU-enabled preview.

Hmmm. But on my Quadro 2000 system, using MainConcept AVS with CUDA selected, it renders almost twice as fast as with CPU-only, and my GPU utilization goes from almost nothing in CPU-only to > 80% at times in CUDA mode.
That’s what makes me think that both the MainConcept and Sony AVC codecs are unable to use Kepler architecture, even with the latest nVidia drivers.

In the drop down his card was listed; we picked that. We did not have to reboot because it was already selected; he knew that from when he 1st installed SVP12.

I’ve been using the default 1080 30p templates for both the MainConcept AVC/AAC and Sony AVC benchmarks. The only things we change are the various CPU/GPU settings. 8-bit, good.
[Dave Haynie] “It could be that NC does the same brain-damaged things in CUDA that it does in OpenGL, only supporting cards it specifically knows about. The 6xx series shipped first in March of 2012, so it would be pretty poor if Main Concept didn’t support them. Also, given the result on the Sony benchmark suggests the same thing, I’d look at your CUDA support.”
When we do a “Check GPU” , Vegas reports that CUDA is available. GPU-Z put checkboxes beside both OpenCL and CUDA , just like it does with my Quadro 2000. On my Quadro 2000, OpenCL is way slower than CPU-only; on his GTX 660 Ti, one second slower. Sure seems like his CUDA is broken from the Kepler thing, not sure why OpenCL is not working for either NVIDIA card.
[Dave Haynie] “Try setting the GPU acceleration setting in Preferences/Video. If there is an OpenCL driver available, you’ll see it as an option there.”
On my system and his, the only options in that drop-down are “none” or the names of the card. OpenCL is only available as an option in the MainConcept render template; in the Sony render template, there are three choices, Auto, CPU-only, or GPU if available.

FYI de-fragging will almost never fix anything, and is rarely needed nowadays.
Create a system restore point before doing anything else. Be sure to create the type that will allow you to roll back files.
Do you have a restore point available from before the problem? DO NOT roll back to it yet.
Post a screen shot of the error window for us to look at.
Give us more details about the project – source files, properties, etc.
Give us more details about your system – have a look at our “signatures”, and create one with that kind of info on your setup.
You mention that Vegas has been crashing, provide more details about that.
If you have access to any kind of disk imaging software, use it to take a full image backup of the disks in question.
Run chkdsk but DO NOT let it fix errors – just see if it reports problems. Here is a sample from my computer:

Hi;
Can you provide a bit more detail?
I’m guessing you have the MainConcept plug-in for the Sony XDCAM Content Browser, and are trying to use it to do some kind of export/transcode of footage shot on an XDCAM camera.
Exactly where does SVP12 fit into this?

I too find this invaluable. Often I set video to music, and need transitions that happen exactly at a certain time. It usually will not be noticeable that an event has been stretched or squeezed in the time domain a bit.
I will loop a section around the spot in the music where I want the transition to happen. As it loops, I watch the waveform for a shape that is easy to recognize at the time-point I need, then split the event, click-drag it until it reaches the point in the music, and then click-drag the other portion of the split to re-join them at the correct point.
I’m sure there are better ways of doing it, but this has worked well for me.
