Effect->Distort->CC Page Turn, if you have 6.5 Pro. Also search this forum… this comes up every other Tuesday or so.

January 9, 2006 at 8:40 pm in reply to: Importing 3D Text and Objects into After EffectsJust to add something regarding your last question (“Should I be using 3D Studio Max or is there a better way or program to create these objects?”) – it’s really not a question of “better”, there are several excellent 3D applications and, frankly, 3D text and logos is something rather basic you can easily do in any of them. I would say, though, that MAX is a relatively expensive option if all you need is flying logos… a lot of people use Cinema 4D for this kind of stuff, and Softimage|XSI Foundation is also an excellent choice which costs significantly less than 3D Studio.

January 5, 2006 at 7:10 pm in reply to: Need comments for my first Demo REEL: Currently in production.I don’t think it’s your first post here 🙂
You also have a tutorial published at the Cow… thanks for this BTW 😉
You have some great stuff in your reel, but I join prvious responders in suggesting that you make it sigificantly shorter. It’s stretched way too thin. Also, I feel the low poly character animation work is of lesser quality than the rest, and its style does not really fit in there.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info, Steve. This is really helpful. I will certainly give Nucleo a try, though unfortunately I only have a P4 with HT right now, no dual cores or dual processors…

Could you say something on how Nucleo fits in with X-Factor? I’m thinking of using an extra laptop and desktop I have as render slaves, and I’m curious if I should also consider Nucleo on top of that, or if those are mutually exclusive.

One easy way to make *anything* loop is to duplicate the layer-to-be-looped, split the dup in the middle, swap the two halves and apply a fade-in/fade out transition between the two layers.

December 10, 2005 at 9:08 am in reply to: Adding effect like lens flare to ADJUSTMENT LAYER on Video Footage“It doesn’t show” meaning you still see your video but not the flare? When you added the black solid, did you see it? It’s supposed to hide your footage, so I wonder if you haven’t put it underneath by mistake. You can also apply a Render-Lens Flare effect directly to the footage layer.
Not sure what you’re doing wrong, but frankly this is RTFM stuff 🙂 Or the Calf…

My 2 cents: I’m sure Boxx machines are good, but they’re quite pricey. You can usually get it cheaper if you build your own, but I was lazy and got me a pre-built system from Velocity Micro which I’m very happy with. It’s based on a P4 3.2GHz, just 1 Gig RAM (I’ll probably add more soon) and NVidia Quadro FX1100. Runs XSI and AE without a glitch, stable and reasonably fast.
In addition, I use a Dell M70 “workstation laptop”, also with NVidia and 2 Gigs of RAM. It also handles XSI and AE with no problem.

(this place needs a FAQ 🙂 ) look for an AE tutorial here called “Making things grow”. It’s hard work but the results are excellent.

November 23, 2005 at 7:07 am in reply to: expanding/generating effect over layer bordersJust precomp that layer, or perhaps create a composition that is wide enough to include your desired effect, put the layer in the middle of the comp, nest this comp inside your main comp and apply the effect to the nested comp.
