I would encode the file out of premiere (or whatever program you edited/captured it in) and then import the finished mpeg2. Never been a big fan of the encore transcodes. Hope that idea helps.

Ahh, thanks for the post. I suppose I had overlooked something like that – I assumed the text that lemony was ouputting fixed any sort of details.
I’ll check this out in a bit and post the result. I was going crazy, as I’d experienced this same sort of thing with PAL > NTSC framerates (though, I just recently tried using lemony).

A minor (and more confusing?) update.
I thought, why not attempt the same chain of events – but on a mac with DVDSP. Well, after exporting the xml – converting to STL and re-importing, I see the exact same problem …

Update – on this project I imported the 23.976 subs, preview mode was off. But the final DVD played the track as it should –

Export the XML as XML V1, Then use Lemony (PC) to edit / convert etc to text. Works like a charm. There are other FCP XML converters, but lemony seemsto work best for me.

If you encode your mpeg2 (in final cut, premiere, etc) and import it into Encore as it’s orignal 23.976 rate – it will stay a 23.976 file. Though Encore shows it as 29.97, it’s actually what you started with (encore won’t re-code that file). I don’t usually transcode with Encore, so I can’t speak for it’s ability to translate frame rates when it encodes.
Sort of any annoying technical aspect of Encore – I hope they change this in Encore 3.

Update …
After upgrading quicktime, various drivers and the blackmagic drivers I still get
‘Error Compiling Movie – Unknown Error’
At the last frame, last second – so instead of it just being done, it deletes the work and errors.

Yeh, good point. I just went out and grabbed a new SATA drive to attempt to avoid the firewire channel I was rendering from. Fairly frustrating to come back to a 6 hr encode and have it be messed up. I’d do it in HD (like the original footage); but I don’t have 700gigs externally to spare for that.
The big hope is to get the SD footage and encode with a PC (cinema craft) out of that for a DVD. I don’t mind compressor, but CCE seems to do a little better job with colors and motion.
In case someone happens upon this, I’ll add an update to how everything comes out.

Tahnks for the reply – figured as much, but I just had to hear it from someone else. Hope they fix that in the new versions – even if it’s just for a piece of mind.

If anyone finds this thread in a search. Here’s what I went through to convert 25 FP 16×9 DV footage to 4:3 NTSC AVI. This is off the top of my memory; double check your work if you choose to use this …
get VirtualDub (free, open source)
Open your file –
Go to Video > Frame Rate
* Check ‘keep audio / video same length’ (or something like that)
* check ‘new FPS – enter 29.97’* Filter > add filter
– resize
– 720 x 380 (for this project)
– output 720 x 480; letterboxed.I added a crop on this in the filter menu as well – 4px on the top and bottom (got rid of a flicker from the conversion).
