The control room config is set in the Video and Audio I/O Preferences.

You have your speaker config set to the default stereo set-up. If you swap to for example 5.1, then the control room meters will show that.

  • Ah, sorry. I should have checked your platform. Hawaiki Keyer is indeed Mac-only at this point.

  • Can I recommend that you have a look at our Hawaiki Keyer which not only has a very powerful Screen Clean option (which is effectively a synthetic clean plate that helps to even out problem backings) but there are also more advanced edge control options than you will find in any other keyer.

It seems to make fairly light work of your shot from the quick test that I ran.

There is a free watermarked trial version so you can try before you buy.

  • If you are simply talking about the rings that pulsate outwards, here’s how to set up the Emitter.

Set the Shape to Circle and the Arrangement to Outline.

Set the Emission Range to zero.

On the first frame set the Birth Rate to a large number like 1000.

    Keyframe the value.

Step forward a couple of frames and set the value to zero.

Step forward about one second and set another keyframe (again at zero).

Open up the Keyframe editor and with the Birth Rate parameter selected, click on the tiny dropdown to the right of the control and select After Last Keyframe/Repeat.

That will create a set of continuously pulsing rings.

    Test project here: 14105_pulastingrings.motn.zip

The oscillating rings are a bit more tricky but you didn’t ask about those.

Are you able to share your clean plate and a more usable version of your character?

You can contact me at simon@tokyo-uk.com if you prefer.

You need a clean plate of your background, or at least something that is close enough to a clean plate of the background that it will fool the eye.

Then you simply need to key out your character and merge that over the top of your distorted clean plate.

One option for distorting the clean plate would be to use a 2D Displace which can give you a nice lighting effect similar to the reference. But a simple scaling of the image would also work.

There are a few more steps you’d need to take to get a good Displace which I can explain if you’re interested.

You simply need to animate the X position as well as the Z position, as in this example. You can edit the X position spline to get exactly the left to right movement you want.

  • Sorry, Michael. Here it is again.

BTW I’m not doing any especially fancy when I revert the version numbers. You can do the same if you open the Motion project in Text Edit and change the numbers.

My 5.4.5 version looks like this:

In order to give you your version I changed it to this:

Just make sure you only change the two sets of numbers – don’t retype the quotation marks as these might then turn into Smart Quotes and break everything.

Also obviously it’s best to make a copy before attempting the edit.
