[Justin Mrkva] “Actually, to be accurate, the oscillation speed of a swinging pendulum (your sign) doesn’t change over time. Physics nerds will cringe if you speed up the oscillation as the motion dampens. And it avoids the extra step of adding the ramp behavior to the speed.”

I thought of pointing this out but then I thought we’re talking about Motion Graphics here not the “real” Newtonian universe, and if Don wants the speed to increase there’s no reason why it shouldn’t – hence the tip for how to do it 😉

[Don Smith] “With just the amplitude ramp the swing was unnatural because the speed didn’t ramp up as the amplitude with each swing decreased. I’m on a quest.
    “

Then all you need to do is apply another Ramp behavior to the Speed parameter to increase it as much as you like over the duration of the animation.

January 13, 2013 at 5:45 pm in reply to: Reset Anchor Point

The anchor point and the position parameters are logically related so you can’t change one without the overall positioning of the layer being affected.

If you move the anchor point 100 pixels to the left (-100) you need to move the X position parameter the same distance (-100) to compensate.

If your anchor points are at rogue positions you need to note the values in question and add or subtract them from your position parameters when resetting to zero in order to keep everything as it was.

But why are your anchor points coming adrift in the first place?

    Hi Don

This is really easy to do with behaviors. Add an oscillate behavior to the X rotation, then add a Ramp behavior to the Oscillation amplitude taking it down to zero from whatever value you want to start with.

    Works a treat.

You might want to play with the Curvature control of the Ramp behavior as well for extra finesse.

January 4, 2013 at 10:38 pm in reply to: Problem with Edge Collision in Motion 5

Apologies, I didn’t look closely enough at your original post before answering.

You’re right that there’s something screwy about the Edge Collision behavior when you reduce the height below a certain amount.

The way I would do this is with an Oscillate behavior on the Y Position Transform set to Half Range, using a Ramp behavior on the Amplitude to gradually reduce the bounce height. That way you can position the result wherever you want very easily.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbiGRlhkpN8

The Half Range option means that there will be a “collision” effect at the bottom.

Here’s how I’d set it up:

Notice that I’ve adjusted the Phase (from the default of zero) so that the “ball” starts off screen at the top.

Why not try adjusting the Height parameter for the Edge Collision behavior so that the bottom edge lines up where you want it, then turn off the Top Face option so that it doesn’t get in the way. Works quite nicely, especially if you use the Gravity behavior for the falling object.

Try selecting Under Fill for the Outline Order (as opposed to Over Fill – the default) and turn on Preserve Width and you have full control over the width.

    Hi Saul

Here’s a short video that I’ve just made to guide you through using this effect:

[craig slattery] “Thanks Simon, school boy error. Thankfully only on this post.”

I only mention it because he’s the most exciting director working in the UK today – Kill List is essential viewing, as is Sightseers.
