I’d use a Particle Emitter driven a Match Move of the action with enough particles (Life and Birth Rate) to more or less fill out a continuous line.

[Oliver Peters] ” Looks like complete junk, I’m afraid, from what I can tell in this video.”

Agreed – from this evidence the colors look even more scrambled than we used to get in the FCP7 to Color workflow.

This demo by Sam Mestman of the FCP X/Resolve roundtrip throws up some interesting points about what kinds of things translate and what doesn’t:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oxv-RWQmI1M&list=UU6FpoTG28AgyxVSACBD8xzA&index=15

It seems that although Resolve “recognises” the FCP X color corrections it doesn’t translate them accurately, even as a starting point.

You need to click on the Orbit button – and keep holding down – then drag to orbit the camera.

Holding down the mouse button activates the mode.

  • Truly appalling – if indeed it is true, which it certainly appears to be.

motionvfx do outstanding work across the board and don’t deserve this kind of thing.

As Helmut says, make sure this story gets passed around.

February 6, 2013 at 9:44 pm in reply to: Crop Feather?/ Trim Feather

[bud kuenzli] “that link does not work any longer and I’m also looking for a crop and feather effect that will allow me to ajust the left/right/up/down crop while maintaining a feathered edge…”

You can use the Crop and Feather effect now in FCP X, or you could try out this effect which has onscreen controls for adjusting the left/right and top/bottom crop, offset controls and the ability to apply horizontal and vertical feather independently of each other:

    5395_tkyadjustablecropinstaller.app.zip

Double click the archive to unzip it and then double click the installer to install.

    Hope that’s useful.

January 29, 2013 at 4:58 pm in reply to: Independent replicator cell animation

[Matt Compton] “How do I animate each cell to slowly drift on the X,Y + Z within a specified distance (I dont want cells floating off in the background)”

Apply a Sequence Replicator Behavior to your Replicator. Add a Position Parameter to the Behavior.

Increase the X, Y and Z values to taste. Set Sequencing to Through. Increase the Spread value so you get a smooth blend between each adjacent value. Set the number of Loops you want to get the right speed.

[Matt Compton] “The video wall is made from a replicator using an image sequence as the cell source with a scale randomness applied to give it the impression of depth.”

You don’t need to do this part as the Behavior will take care of the scaling for you …

  • Create a Line.

Add a Replicator for the line (hit L).

Set the Replicator Shape to Circle and the Arrangement to Outline. Under Cell Controls, check the Align Angle checkbox.

You should now have a radiating set of lines – set the Points to determine the number of repeating lines and the Radius to determine how big the circle will be.

Add a Sequence Replicator Behavior. Add a Scale parameter. Set the Scale value to zero and select From in the Sequencing menu.

Adjust the duration of the behavior to determine the duration of the animation.

That should give you the effect you are looking for.

Hope that helps to get you started.

January 25, 2013 at 9:40 am in reply to: Drop Zones in FCP X Effects

A published Effect will always be a composite once you’re in FCP X so you can’t strictly do what you’re asking.

However you could make the your Motion project a Generator instead of an Effect which will mean your background won’t be included and hence you will be able to color correct it to your heart’s content (or add any other filters to your background layer).

That’s assuming that you don’t need your Motion effect to influence the background clip in any way.

If you do want to affect the background clip as part of the overall effect, why not publish some color filters from Motion for that layer (e.g. Color Balance, Gamma, Saturation, etc.) and then you will be able to control the color inside FCP X.

You could also consider making this a Transition as this sounds more suitable to what you’re describing – but without more details it’s hard to be sure.
