The outstandingly good and useful – and free – PixelConduit plug-in (https://pixelconduit.com/) gives you scopes inside Motion – not the prettiest but adequate as a rough guide.
(Best of all PixelConduit gives you node-based compositing in Motion … Well worth checking out.)

I’m not sure why you would think that a transition is not a compositing operation.
Except in the fact that they don’t auto-animate, After Effects transitions are clearly transitions in the fullest sense of the term.

They clearly make sense to Adobe who give you the option of Transitions in After Effects – where they can be a useful timesaver.
You’re are right that it’s easy enough to make your own in Motion. But just as the Fade Behavior can be a really quick way of adding fades, a Wipe Behavior would make quite a bit of sense too …

This is very easy to achieve already – simply add a Gaussian Blur filter to the mask and you can set different values for horizontal and vertical.

I’d second that – the Ultra Keyer is outstandingly good, in a field littered with keyers many of which are … not so good.

Yes, AudioVision was great – I hated the move to PT at first as it felt like a big step backwards at the time.
But for the record, they killed off an equally great app a lot more recently when they canned DS.

You really should be able to get a decent key off that image – I managed to get a nice clean one even off that JPEG (admittedly using a keyer I built myself). What are you using to try and key it?
Roto is not going to look good in a situation like this which is completely unforgiving of any inaccuracies.
