I too have had this audio problem intermittently on both my Dual 2Ghz G5 (5GB RAM) and 2.4Ghz Intel MPB (2GB RAM). (When using log and transfer for P2 DVCPro50HD being ingested from an external Lacie Quadra V2 FW800.) Both running FCP 6.0.4, OSX 10.4.11 and QT 7.5.
A restart of FCP would sometimes fix it, sometimes rebooting would fix it, and sometimes trashing the prefs would do it, but I haven’t found any long term solution. Anyone got any ideas?Cheers

Shane,
That was it! I removed FX Factory and everything started working. That was the missing link as I did not have FX Factory installed on the G5. Thanks for your help!!

The footage you’re intending to capture is 1080/60i as well right? Forgive the question, but if the footage is 1080/50i, then that is your answer! 🙂
This has happened to me before; when FCP was expecting HDV input, 1080/60i etc, the camera was set to downscale and send out Standard Def (NTSC/PAL). So we had full deck control, but had a black preview screen as the wrong data was beng sent.
The other time it turned out to be a faulty Firewire cable!
If that doesn’t fix it, have you been able to capture HDV from any other camera/deck onto this system? If not, then it could be a corrupted HDV codec. So try capturing using Prores instead. It’s a bigger file size compared to HDV captures, but it might work
Did you trash FCP prefs yet?Cheers,

Have you tried trashing the FCP prefs?

Have you tried reinstalling Sorenson? IMO, Compressor is a more stable app in general, and the output quality is great. I have never really found a need to use anything else. And if the problem isn’t apparent with Compressor, stick with it!
I’d also be a little concerned that your MBP is having trouble running both a 400 device and 800 at the same time.
I work that way frequently, without ever having a single problem. How is your FW800 drive formatted? Mac OS or something else? It can take longer for the OS to recognise a DOS formatted drive, in my experience, up to a minute, where as a OS formatted drive is almost instant.
I would also suggest repairing your OS permissions, using something like Disk Warrior or Tech Tools. If there’s a gremlin in the machine, this may help get rid of it. -
Is this problem visible on the footage before you capture it? Have you previewed the footage directly from the tape using an external monitor and camera/tape deck? Are you seeing the bars there too?
What kind of port sharing issues are you facing? You’re external HD is firewire 400 right? (The port your deck uses?) There should be no problem capturing DV to the internal HD and then transferring it off to your FW HD, although this workflow isn’t recommended. (I would suggest picking up a FW800 drive, as this will not only free up your 400 port, but will give you higher transfer speeds overall. The prices are similar too.) I can’t imagine that port sharing and this transfer method is causing your problem though. My bet, at the moment, is that the issue will also be apparent on the tape before capturing.

Aaron,
Can you expand a little on your workflow for this project? Video format, codec, render settings, version of FCP, hardware etc..
It may help with any diagnosis.
Thanks,

The Apple Disk Utility should help you format the ext HD. The app is hidden away in Applications\Utilities folder.

Hey Alex,
As standard it doesn’t have a shortcut, but you can assign one from the keyboard layout menu. -
You should check out the filters that come packaged in Color too. Might give you some inspiration..
