Thanks Andreas,
I tried pasting directly into the canvas but it had no effect. I finished off creating the problem slides in Photoshop and importing them into FCPX. There are a lot of things to like about FCPX but some of the bugs that have manifested since the death of 7 are really quite unwelcome. (even more dodgy text handling being one of them!!)
When I get time I will definitely try out XTI. Thanks for the suggestion!

It certainly looks like a big step forward.. but as ever, it’ll be hard to tell until we actually get to drive it ourselves. The magnetic timeline looks interesting as do the timing controls and dynamic waveforms. I’ve always been a little wary of 1.0 releases though so I think I’m going to stick with cautious optimism for now! (and set aside a mac for testing purposes!)
I will be interested to see how FCP X handles the system architecture. Will it still be hard drive based or will it be project based? The ‘Final Cut Pro Documents’ folder works well for tape based media, but there was a definite slant in this presentation towards tapless media, which as we all know, never makes it into the Capture Scratch folder. I wonder if FCPX will allow for a more dynamic project based folder/scratch structure where all media from any source will end up in the same location? (Or whatever the user desires)I also hope Apple are in cahoots with Lynda.com or Larry Jordan etc for the roll out as it would be extremely useful to have access to some decent video tutorials to help us through the early transitional period.

Hi Tucker,
Working in Prores for DVCAM footage isn’t really going to give you that much extra. It just raises the ceiling for graphics and colour correction. ProRes uses a greater colour space than DVCAM so you have more room to manouver. At a push, I might transcode DVCAM to 8bit uncompressed if I need to do something special with the footage but if it’s a simple cut with simple graphics and minimal colour correction, I probably won’t change a thing. I usually reserve ProRes for Hi Def work.All the best,

Hi Blake,
Working on an external FW 800 Hard drive will only serve to increase your productivity and the reliability of your system. Wherever possible, never capture footage to your internal drive. Keep your footage and OS/applications separated. You can keep your project file on the OS drive, but I tend to keep everything on externals and just point the autosave vault to the internal drive.

Hi Frank,
Usually, from the cluster drop down menu in Compressor, you should see “This Computer” and any clusters that you have set up.
Check your Q-Administrator settings in System Preferences. If you’re not able to submit from Compressor, try resetting Q-Administrator services from within system prefs. This often times fixes random problems with Compressor. If you have any clusters set up, resetting services will require you to setup your clusters again afterwards if you want to be able to use them in Compressor.All the best,

Try 8. You have loads of RAM so it will get shared out nicely over 8 instances! I suggest running a few compression tests. Every system has it’s own nuances.. either way, it is better than 2!!

Hi Joseph,
Would probably suggest doing a multiclip edit. Sync both angles via timecode or in-point, select your audio source from either camera angle then start cutting. When your done with the cut, collapse the multiclip sequence and add the required transitions. Check out the FCP Manual for multiclip editing. You can’t go wrong!All the best,

Yep, I’m using it and it works well enough for me. One core = one instance & ideally 1GB RAM minimum per core/instance.
I’ve played around with the setup on our 8 core for quite a while. Had up to 16 instances available but this didn’t prove as efficient as 10 instances or even 8 – we don’t have enough RAM to match more than 8 instances x8 GB.
The difference between 8×8 and 10×8 was negligible as far as I was concerned.Even my dual core MBP provides me with 2 instances each with 2GB of RAM for number crunching.

Hey Doug,
Only 2 instances on a Quad Core? Check your Q Administrator settings in System Preference. It is recommended to have 1Gb of RAM per instance so you could easily set up 8 instances. That will improve your speeds immensely.

Hi Ju,
Where are you storing your ProRes visuals? If you’ve vision isn’t playing in real time it could be a bandwidth issue. Recommend ESATA or FW800 HDs minimum for prores. 9GBs of RAM? Macs like to work in parallels of RAM. Make sure that your memory slots hold matching RAM eg: 1Gb vs 1Gb. if you have 1Gb Vs 2Gbs, you may run into trouble down the line.
