  • HDV Log and Capture Problem

    Hi Everyone!

I can’t see any video in the video preview area when I try to log and capture video from my Canon HV30 camera. I don’t think the problem is with the camera because when hooked up to a different computer (not mine) I could see video in the video preview area.

I am using Final Cut 5.0.4 and have tried both “HDV” and “HDV 1080i60” settings under easy setup with no luck. I have re-installed Quicktime, unplugged everything, restarted my computer, tried several different settings all with no luck.

Any suggestions or help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you,
    Kate

The footage you’re intending to capture is 1080/60i as well right? Forgive the question, but if the footage is 1080/50i, then that is your answer! 🙂
This has happened to me before; when FCP was expecting HDV input, 1080/60i etc, the camera was set to downscale and send out Standard Def (NTSC/PAL). So we had full deck control, but had a black preview screen as the wrong data was beng sent.
The other time it turned out to be a faulty Firewire cable!
If that doesn’t fix it, have you been able to capture HDV from any other camera/deck onto this system? If not, then it could be a corrupted HDV codec. So try capturing using Prores instead. It’s a bigger file size compared to HDV captures, but it might work
Did you trash FCP prefs yet?

    Cheers,
    Simon

    Kate,

I am having the same problem with my HV30 and FCP 6.0.4. If you solved the problem, can you please tell me how you did it?

In my case my Sony HC-96 (SD) cam still works fine for Log and Capture. But when I connect the HV30 using the same cable, FCP won’t recognize it. I tried a variety (all?) of the device settings, including ‘Noncontrollable Device’ to no avail.

I tried trashing the FCP preferences and that didn’t help.

It “feels” like there is something wrong with the HV30. But when I plug and unplug the Firewire cable from the camera, the ‘HDV/DV’ indicator goes on and off as expected.

If anyone else has any suggestions, I’m all ears.

I am having the same problem. I have uploaded video to my computer in FCP using my HV30 only two weeks ago, but now the computer won’t recognize the HV30. I have read several forums about this, but can’t understand the explanations. I do know that when you go to the blue apple in the corner and click “about this Mac” and then “more info…” and then “firewire” it is supposed to show your camera hooked up to the computer. Mine does not.

People are telling me there is an option on the camera that I have not found. Something to do with HDV/DV that I can’t find. If you toggle it back and forth and then check the computer it will show up on the firewire. If you know how to help me, please post.
