Can you grab the codec files and move them or just install them off of the disc with the drivers for your hardware?

for a scratch disk it does, unless your doing HD… not for capture there you are correct…

You have hit the biggest problem of USB… USB2.0 may have a fast spec but in all honesty FW 400 and 800 are better… personally I have a similar situation on my laptop… I use the firewire one for video capture and USB2.0 for a scratch drive and incremental small backups.
The issue comes down to USB2.0 is not fast enough with overheads… to support video capture…

Before you panic:
try reseting the PMU… and if that doesn’t work try replacing the pram battery, if that doesn’t work boot your computer in target disk mode and get your files off onto another computer, and off to the repair shop for you..

Alt+Ctrl+shift to reset on windows
Cmd+Alt+shift to reset on macand its cache level not history level…

Reduce your history level in preferences I believe its called from 6 to 4 this will speed up opening files, also add an external scratch disc if you can… at least try this before you go back to CS since CS2 is so much better….
As to how to reset photoshop if your on a mac I believe you hold command and option while you launch the app
check on google… I could be wrong.. on the key command

That would be a kernel panic… and probably not a good one
You’ll have to double check this but if I remember correctly kernel panics on startup usually mean bad ram…
Run hardware test… and see…
