August 30, 2007 at 9:21 pm in reply to: Editing existing Type/text

When I create a new layer and double click, with type tool selected, I’m able to edit the text.

It’s just with previously created files that I open and want
to edit later that I can’t make it work.

    Thank you guys.
    Yes, it does make sense.

Frankly, I’ve been thrown into editing, PS and AE running
to meet deadlines for my films. People’s schedules, attitudes,
etc. I’m glad of it. I can try an idea and if it turns out
to be a stinker, no one else is around to smell it.

    Mucho appreciado senoritas.

BTW, Aharon, you’re podcasts have helped so much.
Thank you thank you thank you.

I’ve got several cans of the Rosco paint in my garage.
    Works fine.

    Just don’t over-light it.
    Light it evenly.
Do tests: lighting, shooting, capturing, keying.

If you don’t do this, you’ll quite possibly be sorry.
It’s way more work for the CG guys and way more costly.
Spend the time and DO A TEST.

If you’re shooting in mini DV, the DV Garage plug is well worth
the money. I don’t recommend shooting in anything under 4:2.2
color space, but if you have to, you have to.
There is a great DVD on keying by Serious FX.

    Another important factor:

What color are the actor’s eyes?

Keyer’s had big problems with Travolta’s blue eyes
    against a blue screen………

    I did that.

When I select Easy Out (from an Easy Ease), nothing changes.

How do you clear a “key frame assist” so that you
    can reassign it?

February 5, 2007 at 8:50 pm in reply to: HandCrank Camera Look in “The Illusionist”

    After closer examination, I created a comp in AE 720×480 w Transparent b/g – 30 sec’s.

New Solid Layer – Sepia type color, turn on Action/Title safe guides, pen tool drew vignetting vertical sides and horizontal top/bottom – random shape.

In timeline, every 10 frames, adjusted “Mask feathering” with Opacity around 70.

Copy and pasted that layer, changed the color slightly, then altered the shape (keyframes) of the new mask and the mask feathering to be dif numbers every 10 frames on this layer with a slightly dif opacity.

Making sure that my Opacity and mask feathering numbers are the same at the beginning and the end in case I want to loop the mask later.

Continuing this process varying the shape of the mask, more transparency (clearer) as the mask encroaches on the frame, less transparency (more opaque) as the layer masks shape move into action safe.

When I was done with all the layers, I opened each layer and copied the mask feathering keyframes
and then pasted them inbetween the other keyframes, offset, so the movement happened fluctuating
    twice as much.

Basically created a 30 second template to put on any desaturated and sepia colorized footage.

It gives the impression of a funky crank camera with semi bad glass with variable light hitting
the lens. Looks very close to footage in “The Illusionist”.

Are you sure about the degradation in the 1970’s.
I don’t remember that kind of dust and scratches from back then.
    Maybe the 20’s, 30’s & 40’s…even in the 50’s.

Mostly limited color palette in 60’s.

But the seventies the visuals brightened and cleared up considerably.

Do you have a clip to use as a reference point?
