December 12, 2011 at 5:47 pm in reply to: Why Thunderbolt drives are taking so long to come to market – Larry Jordan explainsWe purchased the Promise Pegasus R6 12TB (6x2TB) RAID running on a Mac Mini Server. After installation we found out that the Promise management software is not yet ready for Lion. Dang thing is fast! Even in RAID 5 we are seeing speeds of 700+- MB/s write and 500+- MB/s read.

Spoke at a college in Sacramento last Wednesday. FCPX is part of their curriculum, the students love the software and they will definitely be using X. These students have no NLE baggage … Does Walter’s opinion matter to this demographic? None of those students know about the COW, the bickering and the heartbreak and probably don’t care. We are using X to put out more product than ever. I don’t have the answers. Conundrum comes to mind.

October 18, 2011 at 4:54 pm in reply to: For those of you still on the fence – check this outWe are pumping out product faster and at what appears to be better quality. Even used FCPX to present multiple videos at a conference a few weeks ago on a $30,000 HD projector. My editors are finding it harder to move back to FCS for projects, however, we do have a multi-cam project to edit next month. Purchased and installed the Adobe suite, but nothing has motivated us to open Premiere.

I approach sports photographer from local TV Station curious about what appears to be a Panasonic camera hidden under rain gear.
ME: Is that a 300 or 370?
PHOTOGRAPHER: What?
ME: The camera, what model is it?
PHOTOGRAPHER: Oh heck, I don’t know?
ME: How old is the camera?
PHOTOGRAPHER: Going on two years.
ME: Probably the 300. Does it record on P2?
PHOTOGRAPHER: Oooohhh, yes.
ME: Hows the light sensitivity?
PHOTOGRAPHER: What is that?
ME: Does it shoot well at night and under these stadium lights?
PHOTOGRAPHER: I think so???
ME: Just purchased the same slot mic package, how do you like it?
PHOTOGRAPHER: Slot mic?
ME: The wireless system you are using.
PHOTOGRAPHER: We can’t figure out how to use both mics at the same time. The last guy could do it, but we can’t figure it out.
ME: You do anything else at the station?
PHOTOGRAPHER: I’m the sports anchor on weekends.
ME: OOOOHHHH!!!

We have a production department that in not funded by public money. Our growth has not been funded by public money. The production staff have done some incredible things over the last ten years. We have produced video for clients all over California and a few other states. Our clients include commercial, private, government and education. We do rent our equipment, but staff must go with to avoid insurance issues. Mostly rent out or crew and grip truck.
We manage all of the local PEG channels and are affiliated with PBS. This facility is operated very much like a commercial station. Three studios, a new HD production truck, grip truck, audio booth and multiple edit suites. METV is … unique!

FCPX has been working very well here at our TV station. And yes, we are making money with it. Thought I would start a personal project using FCP7 the other day … after about 1/2 an hour, I moved the media over to my other partition and stated over in FCPX. It was a breath of fresh air.

I’m starting the Bill Davis fan club.
Two of us are now using X to finish videos. The more I learn, the better the software works … amazing! Did most only give the software a few minutes/hours before passing judgement? I am having to force this old dog to rethink NLE editing. Yes, I have given my screen the middle finger a few times, but the errors were mostly my fault. We are finding that we can say yes to more projects do to the speed of FCP X.
