What is this said capture device? Not knowing that hinders us greatly.

Nope. Can’t be done from the keyboard or anywhere within the FCP system. Has to be done manually from the deck.

How are you importing? Straight 29.97 or are you trying to capture with pulldown?
If your footage is 24P, and not 24PA, then you should be capturing normally, with no pulldown.

Yes, the Avid Mojo is a scam…I will give you that. And the later Avids…I don’t know WHAT they did, but people are having trouble with the Adrenaline line.
I still mainly edit on an Avid…the Avid Meridian system primarily. v.11. That is one rock solid machine. Even the old ABVB MC 7 were good, and still in use for many projects. At least in my line of work, and Avid has the high ground over FCP, in meshing with the Post workflow of Hollywood.
BUT…not to rag on FCP. I still prefer the FCP interface and find it much easier to work with and much faster. And it is gaining ground. Build a standalone FCP system capable of offline and online cutting and it will cost about the same as an Avid offline system.
The onle real card Avid seems to be holding lately is that integration into the broadcast production workflow. And it is losing ground.

Backing up files? You mean loading the footage? FCP 5 is the only app that imports HDV natively, without further compression. FCE HD and iMovie HD capture the footage using the Apple Intermedia COdec, which compresses the footage, often with undesirable results.
There is also LumiereHD. google it.

As far as I know…exporting all the work they have done…with the clips all separate and levels intact…can’t be done. FCP won’t import OMF files, and PtoTools doesn’t support XML. The only way I have been able to get my audio from the sound mixer into FCP is for them to export AIFF files for me to drop into the timeline. But those are aiff files of the FULL mix…and M&E splits.
You can see what Automaic Duck has to offer, but I think they only work FCP>PT, not the other way around…but look and see..

Sorry Rainer, but you are mistaken. The serial numbers from the Educational versions will not work with the upgrade. It won’t accept them.

A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows VideoTechinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can’t view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section
Try all these, and if they don’t work, then it might be the sheer amount of devices the signal has to go thru. You can test by going FW out from the computer to your deck, then from the deck to the monitor, to see if you have an image. If so, then add the VCR and try again, then the switcher, etc, until you find the culprit.
