making backups w fcpExpressHD
Posted by Joe Pitts on May 27, 2005 at 10:28 pmHello ,i’m looking for a way to make backups/recordings from the Sony HDV cam, to a ibook/powermac. if i used fcp express, will FCPHD(5) read those files???? is anyone doing/planning anything like this with HDV?

May 27, 2005 at 11:03 pmBacking up files? You mean loading the footage? FCP 5 is the only app that imports HDV natively, without further compression. FCE HD and iMovie HD capture the footage using the Apple Intermedia COdec, which compresses the footage, often with undesirable results.
There is also LumiereHD. google it.

May 28, 2005 at 1:46 amwhat i mean is we are going to be on the road and want to make a protection copy of our tapes before we fedex them back to edit, and trying not to buy a FCPHD just for this application.

Do you have access to a deck eg. Sony DSR-25, DSR-45?
These decks can write timecode to tape from an external source, and thus you can make perfect tape to tape backups with timecode intact. We do it all the time.
