    Hello ,i’m looking for a way to make backups/recordings from the Sony HDV cam, to a ibook/powermac. if i used fcp express, will FCPHD(5) read those files???? is anyone doing/planning anything like this with HDV?

    Backing up files? You mean loading the footage? FCP 5 is the only app that imports HDV natively, without further compression. FCE HD and iMovie HD capture the footage using the Apple Intermedia COdec, which compresses the footage, often with undesirable results.

    There is also LumiereHD. google it.

    what i mean is we are going to be on the road and want to make a protection copy of our tapes before we fedex them back to edit, and trying not to buy a FCPHD just for this application.

    Hi Joe

    Do you have access to a deck eg. Sony DSR-25, DSR-45?

    These decks can write timecode to tape from an external source, and thus you can make perfect tape to tape backups with timecode intact. We do it all the time.

    He just said it would not. It further compresses the footage.

    ps where shooting HDV…does the deck read timecode from the camera?
