FCP HD doesn’t work with HDV in it’s native format. You need FCP 5 for that. But even then you cannot view the image on an external monitor via Firewire. The only HD format that FCP can do that with is DVCPRO HD.

To view HDV on an external monitor you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Decklink or AJA offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed.
HDV cannot be played out of FCP via Firewire because it’s Long GOP structure is too taxing on your processors to spare the system resources needed to drive an external monitor.

Not sure about the point of the orange bar…other than it will playback the footage somewhat so that you can get a general idea what it will look like.
Only the green render bar is realtime.

I think that Arnie answered your question…or gave you a good place to start. “Overwrite with transition” is what you are looking for. Highlight all your subclips and then drag them into the Canvas and select OVERWRITE WITH TRANSITION…boom. Done.
The big issue here is that FCP is a professional application for those who require rigid and absolute control over the timing of a timeline. We need to deliver shows that are exactly 43:34 with 1 second blacks between acts. If it added a dissolve like you wanted it to, suddenly the timing of our timeline fluctuates with every dissolve we add…shortening it. This is why it demands taht you give the appropriate amount of handles for the transition.
If you don’t need this rigid timing or this control, why are you using FCP? iMovie does exactly what you want, and is free.

Hey now, I have a friend who works there.
Mind you he JUST STARTED TODAY. So maybe he will whip them into shape.
Promax is good. The Dr.Group, is good, I will give them a good review as they set up a bay at a company I worked at. A tad expensive (I really wish they just spoke to me, but hey, they wanted “a professional company” to take care of everything A to Z) but it works just fine.

The moment you create your timeline. As long as your timeline is drop frame, you are good to go.

An Animation file will not play back in real time. If you have a DV sequence, then you need to set the Juicer to DV/NTSC. Animation is too huge and doesn’t buy you anything.
The Orange Render bar means that it can play back, but not in real time. The Green Render bar means realtime playback.
That is your issue.
