non-drop to drop frame
Posted by L Isha on October 4, 2005 at 4:01 amHello to all,
I am working on a project for broadcast shot on dvcpro50 in non-drop. I have to deliver using drop frame. At what point in the workflow do I change the timecode to drop frame?
As always, thanks in advance.

October 4, 2005 at 1:32 pmNot sure if DVCPro 50 is the same as DVCPro HD, but in the HD formats, everything is non-drop frame except true 60p recordings. Everything else edits as non-drop frame.

October 4, 2005 at 4:03 pmI probably should’ve given more information… 🙁 Sorry about that, I was in a rush… 🙂
The footage was shot DVCPro50, in 24P Advanced, at non-drop. I’ve imported the footage as non-drop. I am working on a G5 using FCP5. This is a multi-cam project. Yes, the video advisor on the set said DVCPro50 only shoots at non-drop.
So Walter–or everybody ;-), do I simply make the sequence dropframe as Shane said in his post? Or is there more to it?
Thanks so much!

October 4, 2005 at 4:10 pm…and if it edits as non-drop frame how do you deliver for broadcast? Doesn’t broadcast have to be drop frame. If I edit in non-drop and have to deliver 00:58:30;00 how can I account for accurate time?
Thanks again!

October 4, 2005 at 6:22 pmthat’s all you do. Switch it over to a drop frame sequence, make any adjustments to your TRT to fit the show specs. Quick n’ easy.

It edits perfectly to a drop frame HDCAM via FCP. In fact, I found out from one of the mastering facilities that an AVID can’t make the edit that FCP was making. That is, Edit to Tape from a non-drop timeline to a drop-frame Master tape. It would give an error of mis-matched timecode. But in our work here, we’re able to make frame accurate masters in one of two ways.
1 – Master directly to HDCAM from FCP via HD-SDI
2 – Master to DVCPro HD, take that tape to a mastering facility, and edit from a 1200A to an HDCAM deck feeding timecode from the 1200A.
All of our masters have been dead-on to date so it’s working quite well here. Again, this is only with DVCPro HD, you just can’t create a drop frame timeline unless it’s true 60p.

Just to ultra clarify for you, drop vs. non-drop is only an issue of frame counting. It’s not like mixing codecs or anything like that.
You can edit non-drop footage in a drop sequence with no real ramifications, and vice versa. It’s just a counting scheme, nothing more.
That’s one of the things I wish Avid would address. There’s no real reason you shouldn’t be able to put a non-drop frame timeline on a drop frame tape. It might not be wise to put a drop timeline on a non-drop tape if you’re making a broadcast master, and perhaps that’s why Avid won’t let you do either. To idiot-proof it.

What do you mean by “true 60P recordings”?
I’m editing with material shot with DVCPro HD 720/P60 and Drop Frame is not an option in FCP.
