Dropped Frames???
Posted by Joshua Booth on October 3, 2005 at 2:40 pmI am running FCP on a PowerMac G5, 2.0 GHZ and 4gb of ram. I should be able to use FCP in “unlimited RT,” right? If I try to playback anything from an imported clip to a basic motion, I drop frames. What’s the deal? Do I need more memory. I was told that 4 gigs is plenty. If I need more I can get it no problem. If someone could please give me some advice on this I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

October 3, 2005 at 5:28 pmWhere is the media stored? Not on the system drive I’d hope (you being a certified Apple Pro and all). What is the format of the drive you are storing your Media? And what sort of drive is it?

October 3, 2005 at 7:03 pmNo, its not on the system drive. It is stored on a 250 GB Lacie drive, 148.84 GB used and 84.03 GB available. Not sure what the format of the drive is. I inherited it with the system and have been busy since and I haven’t had a chance to reformat it. I clear it off after every couple projects though. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

October 3, 2005 at 7:05 pmHighlight the drive and hit APPLE-I. Look under format and see what it says. It should be Mac OS Extended…if it isn’t that could be the issue. Then what you’d need to do it copy all the files off of it, reformat it, them copy them back.
If it is Mac OS Extended, then something else is going on…but let’s start here.

October 3, 2005 at 7:55 pmOK then…lets look at this:
“anything from an imported clip to a basic motion”
Imported from where? How? And what do you mean by “basic motion?”
How are you getting the footage you are trying to play back?

October 3, 2005 at 8:14 pmImported clip would be something like a “jump back” from Digital Juice, which is a .mov file. A basic motion would be a still image that I have animated using keyframes under the “motion” tab in the viewer. Basically, anything that, according to the specs, it should be able to playback in realtime it drops frames.
That I capture it plays back, fine. Unless, I put a filter or animate it. Thanks.Joshua Booth

October 3, 2005 at 8:30 pmDid you use the Juicer to convert the Digital Juice files to something your system can handle? Say DV/NTSC? What are the timeline settings you are trying to work with? ANything greater that the DV setting with a firewire 400 drive won’t work, since the firewire 400 drives are really only good for DV files, even though Apple doesn’t recommend they be used at all.
And I assume the moves on the pictures have been rendered, correct?

October 3, 2005 at 8:58 pmSequence is set for dv. I checked the Juicer settings and it was set to compress as an animation file. Which might be the problem.
The “basic motions” are not rendered. The little line at the top of the timeline window is orange. That means that it can play back in real time with our being rendered, right? If this is wrong than my whole issue is a non-issue. Thanks.

October 4, 2005 at 1:01 amAn Animation file will not play back in real time. If you have a DV sequence, then you need to set the Juicer to DV/NTSC. Animation is too huge and doesn’t buy you anything.
The Orange Render bar means that it can play back, but not in real time. The Green Render bar means realtime playback.
That is your issue.
