FCP 4.5 doesn’t do HDV, nor recognize HDV cameras. You need FCP 5 for that.
And the DVCPRO codec isn’t what HDV uses.

That camera is SOLIDLY in the “consumer” column. Meant for families to tape Billy’s baseball game, go home and pop the DVD into the player and watch the highlights. It really isn’t intended for professional use.

Is that the compression of the footage you are using in the timeline? If so, then yes.
The quality issue stems from the fact that your footage originates from a DVD. Mpeg-2 VOBs are HIGHLY compressed, and you are then recompressing them into a workable format. This situation is FAR from ideal. The best thing would be to have the source tapes, but if you only have the DVDs to work with, then you are stuck with this quality loss.

You need to export that as a Quicktime. DV/NTSC.

It has nothing to do with the AJA. You just cannot access these settings with the Capture window open. Choose the settings, THEN open the Log and Capture window.

In re-reading your original post, I noted that you had the Academic version of FCP 4.5
So yeah, if you bought the full version of FCP Studio, you’ll need to pay the full price.
