upgrade to FCP 5 worth it?
Posted by Michael Fasman on November 9, 2005 at 11:04 pmIs it worth spending $1000 to upgrade to FCP 5? (my 4.5 is the Academic version and not upgradable). All my work is single camera. Are the other features worth a grand?

Then no, you don’t really need it. And if you have FCP 4.5, then the upgrade is only $700, not $1200.

November 10, 2005 at 1:32 amOH, yeah. The integration of all those applications, and how they all work together is very good in the latest version. Well worth it for Moton 2 and Soundtrack.

November 10, 2005 at 5:13 amIn re-reading your original post, I noted that you had the Academic version of FCP 4.5
So yeah, if you bought the full version of FCP Studio, you’ll need to pay the full price.
Sorry about that.

November 10, 2005 at 11:00 pmIf you have to repair or mix a lot of audio then the integration with Soundtrack Pro is a big deal.
I was also pleased that “Capture Now” almost starts immediately and you can change the size of the text in the browser so you won’t have to squint as much.
Unfortunetely, the audio meters are still disabled during capture.

If I’m not mistaken, you can turn on audio meters during capture. If you go to Audio/Video settings, then capture presets, then click EDIT on the presets, in the dialog box, under Audio setting, you should see an Advanced button. Click that and in the new dialog box that pops up, you should see a tab for SPEAKER that is set to off. Turn it on and you should have realtime audio levels during capture.

November 16, 2005 at 7:20 pmI’m having the same problem, seeing audio meters run while capturing. They respond to audio inputs before I hiy Capture Now, but then feeze. This doesn’t allow you to monitor levels while capturing, which seems insane. I’m capture analog audio via a Kona LH card.
I called FCP support, they say that it’s working correctly. I told them that seeing audio levels while capturing is crucial and I can’t understand while my previous 6 yr old Media 100 could show me levels and FCP can’t.
I went through the process as explained above. I see no “advanced” button under “audio settings”, just one under video. When I click that, I see no “speaker” tab. I’m running FCP 5.03. Any other thoughts?
