Oh, we still online on NLEs…we offline on Avid Media Composers at 15:1 or 20:1, then online on a Symphony, and either CC on that, or go the DaVinci route.
Very few shows still online tape to tape.

H.264. BUT…people need QT7 to see it. Next is MPEG-4…but many people with PCs can’t se those. Sorenson 3 is the one I use to cover all my bases.

You can sell it. You just need to contact Apple and transfer the license.

Unless it is very high end network stuff, this is the way. Actually, MOST network, even cable, still offlines and onlines. Commercials are different, but I do work for Discovery Channel and National Geographic and History Channel, and the offline/online workflow…going out of house for online…is still the standard practice.
But this is Hollywood, and old habits have a way of sticking around…

Yes. Drop the picture into the timeline, then load it into the view and click on the MOTION tab. You can adjust the SCALE and the CENTER in here, and using Keyframes, move the picture. Time to open the manual and read up on keyframing.

Do NOT use Simple Video Out to master to tape. It doesn’t output correct levels..the whites are too white, and the colors are all off. Use it to black the tape and get the timecode started, but then Edit To Tape.

DVCAM in an HD timeline? Won’t look too good…just so you and they know.
HDCAM eh? Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2, 10-bit 4:2:2, 12-bit 4:4:4 (this one is usually reserved for film out).
Best thing to do it edit everything in the DVCAM timeline, for ease of editing. Drop in the graphics and resize to fit the current project. When you lock the cut, drop everything into an uncompressed HD timeline, add the graphics again so that they are now at full resolution…and render.
But now you need an HD card, high speed RAID, and an HDCAM deck for output. Deck is rentable, but they other stuff you will have to purchase. Kona 2, Kona LH, Decklink HD…

You can’t edit .rm, nor can you convert.
Real Media is really only meant for web delivery and playback, not editing.
The best you can do us use SNAPZ pro to capture the video as it plays back thru Real Player. But then quality is REALLY suffering. The fact that they are .rm means that the quality isn’t all that hot to begin with.
Why did they send you .rm? Can you get them to send you the footage in a different format? Quicktime preferred.

DVCAM…HDV…don’t require much. Lowest end G5 and either a secondary internal drive, or external firewire drives. Monitor? 17″ will seem VERY small, get a 19″ or larger CRT for economics. LCDs are nicer, and the AGP or DVI connection greatly improves the image, but if you are going for economics, then the CRT monitors are cheaper.
And while you can get away with a camera for capture, but really nothing beats capturing from a Deck. The DSR-11 is the lowest end model I’d recommend, and is a workhorse.
