What version of Avid? The Avid Mojo might be your only option. Avid software requires Avid hardware. They are pretty guarded that way.

If you have a TV…a plain old TV, then you aren’t going to be able to monitor HD. SD only. The only way to monitor HD is with an HD monitor. This is true for Avid as well. If you have HD footage, you’ll need a capture card with the appropriate outs that might downconvert it to work on a TV. Kona LH comes to mind.
The cheapest would be to get the Canopus ADVC-110…firewire from your computer to it, then RCA from it to the TV. Your next option would be a capture card with analogue outs, like the Decklink SP.

And if you get Color Finesse for FCP, you get your Curves. Well worth it.

Same thing as what?
When FCP captures, it captures the media as quicktime files. Those files can be in any codec…DV, uncompressed, HD…FCP just uses the Quicktime “wrapper” for all that it captures.

The are in the VIDEO FILTERS>Color Correction. Hard to miss.
The best tool is the 3-way Color Corrector, although it doesn’t have adjustments for curves. I still find I can accomplish quite a bit with it.
But it is still nothing compared to Color Finesse.

Only one place I worked had the Lead Editor (finishing editor) go to the color correction and final mix. But they did it with good reason. Often the “look” we gave to the footage wasn’t done correctly at the online, or a chyron wasn’t done right…and the associate producers don’t know this, and the main producers are busy, so we get one paid day to attend the online layback.
We also get a day for the mix, where we make sure all the music hits right and the SFX are all present.
This company does shows for Discovery Channel, National Geographic and the Travel Channel.

What format of DVCPRO? I don’t think the DSR-11 plays back DVCPRO footage…at all. MAYBE DVCPRO 25, but no way does it handle DVCPRO 50. I have the deck, but never had to play those format of tapes.

G4s require ATA drives. IDE drives come in the ATA configuration, just make sure that when you buy one, is says ATA.
G5s require SATA drives.
