  • color correction in fcp as opposed to after effects…

Posted by Alexander Gao on December 29, 2005 at 1:00 am

I have a movie shot in dv footage, and I have color corrected some of the shots in after effects after capturing with fcp. i altered the curves of the footage and then attached a photo filter and put an overlayed solid over the footage. this gave me the tint i was looking for, and the proper brightness and contrast. I was wondering where fcp’s color grading tools are? Are they not in the video filters menu? Also, is it possible to do such things in fcp, like overlay solids, and adjust curves? any input greatly appreciated.

The are in the VIDEO FILTERS>Color Correction. Hard to miss.

The best tool is the 3-way Color Corrector, although it doesn’t have adjustments for curves. I still find I can accomplish quite a bit with it.

But it is still nothing compared to Color Finesse.

is there anything that fully takes the place of curves though? these are necessary, but I’d really rather not go to AE if possible.

I use the 3 Way Color Corrector in FCP for all my current broadcast color correcting, both in SD and HD, it’s extremely good. Though I just purchased Final Touch HD and as soon as I get up to speed on that, I’ll be using FT for all my color correction work. It’s a realtime CC tool that essentially emulates a daVinci. Really powerful and amazing tool.

The beauty of this is that you export an XML from Final Cut Pro, do all your CC in Final Touch, then export an XML right back to Final Cut Pro. So you get a whole new timeline with all your shots in-tact, but color corrected. Very very slick.

You could export your solid color as a .PCT (PICT image file) and place it over your footage that you have color corrected–perhaps using the the Color Correct 3-way–and select the composite mode for the solid PICT like Screen, Overlay, Multiply, etc. You can adjust the tint with the opacity of the solid PICT.

You can also create your own solid from the Generators in the lower right hand of the Viewer.

Check you manual concerning Composite Mode.

And if you get Color Finesse for FCP, you get your Curves. Well worth it.

Effects Essentials have curves plug ins for use inside of FCP.

Nattress’ film effects (version 2.5) has curves (improved over previous versions). It has perfect conform since it’s a plug-in, as opposed to XML (which will lose some things like speed change). You can also play back footage, unlike Color Finesse.

$99, free upgrades, nice support direct from the developer himself.

The (dark) saturation is also nice… gives a different look that FCP’s and looks better in my opinion.

Do check out the demo first, and email for support if it doesn’t work on your system.

    2- Effects Essentials looks interesting.

I tried the demo version of Color Finesse and it didn’t offer me any better color looks than the 3-Way with the Levels Filter. So I really didn’t see the need to spend the money.

Now Final Touch HD is an absolutely incredible color correction tool that operates in realtime and keeps my timelines intact. Amazing tool and I’m just starting to figure it out.

Also comes with fully accurate scopes which Final Cut Pro does not. Anything outside of Safe Title is not included in the scopes. So for $4k I get fully accurate scopes in addition to a CC tool. The cheapest decent HD scope is about $11k so if I do nothing but check levels with Final Touch, it’s well worth the money.
