But going to film school and majoring in film productions gets you a very rounded knowledge of all aspects of film making. VERY helpful. You’d have a leg up over the people who majored in Business or Economics.

mpeg-2 is not editable. You need to De-mux the clip and convert it to a quicktime format FCP understands. Use MPEG STREAMCLIP for this.

Usually a meduim comression half sized (320×240) Sorenson compressed…but really…ask them. Don’t they know what they usually get?

If a FW400 device and FW800 are on the same bus, then the FW800 slows down to FW400.

If you are using a DV sequence, then you are compressing your pictures 5:1. DV is known to be bad for pictures, titles and graphics.
If you work in an 8-bit uncompressed timeline, things will look MUCH better.
TV resolution is 720×486…so that is the best your timeline can get. Unless you go HD and get either 1280×720 or 1920×1280…but then you would lose that as you go to DVD as there are no HD DVDs yet that play back on consumer equipment.

Ah yes, CROWD REPLICATION. If it is an open field, than green screening your two actors several times (at the same angle at the original shoot) might do it for you. But crowded woods? With lots of trees and shrubs? Your talking SHAKE…

I just have the two drives daisy-chained to the main FW 800 port. No problems so far.

Look in your EFFECTS tab under MATTE. There you will see 4-POINT GARBAGE MATTE and 8-POINT GARBAGE MATTE. When you apply those, you can adjust the shape of the matte…in a limited way. You have to play with it. And for moving shots, you need to key frame it and make adjustments on each frame. VERY time consuming.

In the browser or on the drives? If on the drives you see -av-1, 1-av-2…that means that your drive is formatted in a PC format that only allows 2GB max files sizes, like FAT 32.
Your drive should be formatted Mac OS extended.
