Hi,
You could do that by using a mask. If your waves disappear it could be that you are not assigning your mask in the “Mask” menu.

You could still use the good old Text Path and animate the “Visible Characters” parameter under “Advanced.

Maybe what you have seen on TV was real 3D like Steven said but are you using the 3D transform properties and camera? Animating the mask also helps a lot.

Hi,
Select the Brightness parameter of your effect in the Timeline then Shift+alt+= You will then see some highlighted text in the Timeline. Replace that text with the mentioned expression.
