Encore 2 won’t even recognise the QT ref file – it complains that its not the correct pixels (720×576 i seem to recall) despite those being the proportions I’ve outputted from Avid.
I’ve given up on Encore and am going back to MyDVD, just need to fix my aspect ratio problems…. see other posts!!

Yes, I know, I work at the BBC. Seemingly most people in the UK have either a 16:9 TV or at least a 4:3 with the facility to automatically switch to a 16:9 viewing mode!
The problem is that my DVD authoring SW (Roxio Creative Suite 9 MyDVD) definitely embeds the AFD code (Active Format Descriptor) as if you choose 16:9 menu or 4:3 menu it will flag the TV to switch, but always switched the TV back to 4:3 for the video, which is actually 16:9! (and the occasional glitch)
anyway, I’m exporting from Avid as 16:9 but I think that the information is either being stripped off at the export stage or during the transcode to Mpeg2 in MyDVD.
Will do some tests, but current thinking (among some colleagues here) is to try to get Avid to do the MPEG2 export (though there is a residual bug in Avid which can break the MP2 codec). After this if the problem remains, I can use a freeware util called ‘restream’ to check whether the MP2 has the 16:9 info in its stream, if not apparently this app will let you change it.

cheers, I’m only on the trial of Encore, and only downloaded the trial because I read a ‘how to’ from a university on how to make a DVD in Encore from an Avid QT ref.
To be honest, Roxio MyDVD does a fair job, but there’s one thing that it doesn’t do, and that’s get the aspect ratio right!
does DVDit get this right? – Judging by the majority of posts, people on this forum tend to be in the US, is aspect ratio a problem you have in the States? Most domestic SD camcorders here are 16:9 now and the majority of people have 16:9 TVs, or at least 4:3 TVs with the capability to detect 16:9 material and switch to a widescreen view.

I don’t think you’re able to.
Bear in mind that dpi is just a ratio between the print size and the pixels your image is made up from. So your image is probably about 720×480 (NTSC?) (Unless you’re high def or PAL or whatever) – So, if you want a 300dpi image from the 720×480 image, you can either change the dpi in photoshop (or any reasonable print package) and end up with a tiny image or resample the image in the print package and end up with a largish image at high dpi but quite poor quality.
So in a nutshell, the screen dpi is 72, so you can’t get any more than that from avid. you can ‘upsample’ in a third party application, but that’s about it.

hi chaps, sorry to jump into your thread, but do you guys have any problems with aspect ratio changes (or is this a UK thing!) with your DVDs, I can’t work out if Avid is not adding the 16:9 detail into the QT ref file or whether my DVD authoring SW (MyDVD) is not handling the data correctly.

I can’t answer it but as I read this I’m trying yet another derivation of settings in QT export to try to get my aspect ratio to work correctly.
I’m using Avid Pro 5.5 and RoxioEasyMedia Creator 9 (MyDVD) – I am successfully doing QT ref exports which I can make DVDs from, but struggle to get the DVD to have the correct AFD detail (Active Format Descriptor) as in, you can set the menu to be 16:9 but the pictures jump back to 4:3 on the TV, despite the QT ref file being exported as 16:9. Not sure if this is an Avid or Roxio prob!!

Oh, I just downloaded a trial version of Encore (v2.0) to see if I could get the qt ref file in through that OK and it won’t even import – complains about the file’s resolution.
My avid project is 16:9 PAL, I don’t see what Encore’s complaining about unless avid saves a QT ref in some wacky format!

cheers, yeah, fraid that’s with video mixdowns. maybe its just a question of try try try!! – the problem is (as I’m sure everyone will understand) that for this particular project time is not an issue as its a personal project, but when I do my next long form work project it won’t be acceptable!!
