not true, you can have 411PAL and 420 PAL, so I assume that both are available in NTSC too.
We used to use DVCPRO (411) and now use DVCAM (420) I am not too technical about this but believe they’re just different compression formats.

Where I work we constantly use recycled tapes and do occasionally get dropout from them, but its low enough that we take the risk. Most of our crews will use brand new tapes for shoots, but we’re a regional news outfit so there’s rarely anything that important!!
The worst tapes for this are the domestic miniDV tapes we use in place of the proper mini-DVCam tapes. I think the domestic tapes have a lower quality coating on the tape.
Tthe one thing we should do but don’t is have ‘number of pass’ stickers on the tapes (we used to do this), this way we’d know if we had used the same tape countless times. That’d be a sensible thing to do if you’re considering using recycled tape.

thanks, but am using DVCam and domestic DV at SD, so 25 I think. various audio bit rates though. However, the playout to tape is fine, its just the transcoding. The thing is that its not always repeatable and therefore unpredictable, could be something stupid like not enough RAM, but I don’t know…

Yes, I’ve done mixdowns before export – it helps, the first problem was finding a third party application that did everything I wanted (in terms of menu authoring) and ‘understood’ the QT ref file. I think I’m there with that, and I’m certain that the problem is outside Avid, but was wondering about using 5.7’s ‘send to’ option (does 5.5 have this?! Am not at home at the mo)
The problem is definitely not Avid as my direct playout is fine. I can output to tape and re-capture through a third party, but would prefer to be able to do it through file transfers instead – potentially less time consuming and in theory better qual!
Otherwise will start a new topic to collate experiences of different third party apps. I can send to a DV tape and record using a DVD recorder, but this is terrible quality.
Again, 3min pieces are fine, its the longer form that seem to suffer.
