Export settings for DVD
I’m trying to burn a high-quality DVD for a screening of a short film and am having difficulty avoiding pixilation and grainy outputs. What is the best export setting? I’ve been exporting as an uncompressed Quicktime movie with varying results. Smaller is better: 432×324 looks much better than 720×540 – any suggestions about size?
Been burning with idvd, which is just destroying the quality of the image. Will be getting DVD Studio Pro to try that out, but still not sure what the ideal Avid export settings are. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My specs:
Avid Express Pro 5.7
iMac – OS X Version 10.4.9
2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

I am not a fan of the encoder inside iDVD as far as quality – I use third party software to first encode the MPEG2 file, then author in a DVD authoring application.
I do a QuickTime Reference export. How does your Quicktime look when exported? If that looks fine, then it is the encoder.

I’ve had good results by simply highlighting the sequence in it’s bin, going to file and “send to” DVD authoring.
All the default settings have given me a great product. When I made a QT Ref file then take it into DVD it … that is when I got into trouble. AVID default settings in to DVDit worked well, for me.spfister

There are several ways to work… there is the “Send to”, I am just used to creating a QT ref and controlling the parameters of the encoder myself in Sorenson Squeeze.

Thanks! This worked like a charm. Video quality is much better. Only issue will be file size for longer edits, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

I here you … when I do the “Send to” thing … I almost feel like I’m shooting in auto iris.

hi chaps, sorry to jump into your thread, but do you guys have any problems with aspect ratio changes (or is this a UK thing!) with your DVDs, I can’t work out if Avid is not adding the 16:9 detail into the QT ref file or whether my DVD authoring SW (MyDVD) is not handling the data correctly.

Avid does not put any aspect ration flags in the QT. That needs to be set manually in the MPEG2 encoder before encoding.
