It’s not just the colorspace. HDV is extremely lossy. Capturing the raw uncompressed feed – there’s a lot to be said for that.

It would probably work fine, but without testing it in real life you’ll never know. I don’t believe anyone has tested whether or not the dual-core of the MBP can handle HD ProRes. Just make sure you have the option to return whatever you buy in case it doesn’t work out.
Having said that I think you are making a mistake. If you are working with HDV, you should capture and edit HDV natively. That is the superior workflow. And FCP 6 allows HDV footage that is not “cuts-only” to be rendered as ProRes. So it’s a lossless workflow.
EDIT: I just re-read the end of your post, I see you want live capture. So like I said, it will probably work but the only way to know for sure is to test it yourself.

I’d focus your attention at the IOHD. That sounds like where the problem may be coming from. Maybe call AJA support.

24p media can still have 29.97 timecode. This naturally occurs when you capture a 29.97 tape while removing pulldown. Video is 23.98, but the TC is still 29.97.
As you discovered, this does not occur when converting with Cinema Tools. But you can change it back to 29.97 TC by simply using Final Cut’s “Modify -> Timecode” tool.

I usually go to Newegg.com for bare computer parts. The cheapest one they have is a Lite-On 2x burner for $370. 4x Pioneer for $430.
The only dual-layer burner is the Sony that Walter mentioned. It’s $600.
If you have a PPC G5 you’ll need a SATA to IDE adapter as well.

These 24″ displays are puny. Check out the 37″ Westinghouse. If you have a desk that can accommodate it (should be 4-5ft. away from you) then you’ll never go back.
