Conform and subclip connections
I was wondering if this is possible. Say an assistant editor captures some clips from a digibeta and then makes subclips from those clips for individual takes. Now say as the editor I come in and want to either conform the master clips to 24p (slowing them down) or remove the 3:2 to make them 24p. Now if I do this I am going to change the TC of my master clips’ media files. Is there a way to make so that the subclips that my assistant made aren’t useless? If I reconnect the original clips (most likely getting a warning about the timecode being different), will my subclips be cool? I have a feeling that they will be in the example of the reverse telecine, but probably not in the “conform”/slowdown example…as that REALLY screws with the timecode.
The reason I ask this is I am working on a project that was shot on film at 30fps, but the film was supposed to run at 24 during the transfer to give a subtle slow motion feel (no sync sound on this stuff). Unfortunately the transfer house transfered it at 30fps, making it so I don’t have 3:2 on my digi, but rather 30p footage. The assistant editor came in last night, captured the stuff and made subclips at 29.97…I came in this morning, realized that the transfer had not been done correctly, so I duplicated the master clips in the finder and then ran them through Cinema Tool’s conform to 24fps function. I then just brought these into FCP and made subclips, as I thought it would be quicker than messing around with reconnecting and stuff, since it is for a commercial so not much footage, and the shoot was well slated. Anyhow, just want to know about this in case I run into it in the future.

24p media can still have 29.97 timecode. This naturally occurs when you capture a 29.97 tape while removing pulldown. Video is 23.98, but the TC is still 29.97.
As you discovered, this does not occur when converting with Cinema Tools. But you can change it back to 29.97 TC by simply using Final Cut’s “Modify -> Timecode” tool.
