Can You Automate FCP?
So I have 1000 short video clips that I need to add fade in and fade out’s to.
I know this is an odd request, but I have to do this, and I am PRAYING there is a way to automate the process like you can with an action in PhotoShop.
Can someone give me some advice on how to best go about doing this… I REALLY dont want to do this manually!

I don’t think so but you could do it in Compressor with the same result. The QT filters acan put a fade in and fade out to you clips.

Place your clips in the timeline. Add your fade in and fade out on your first clip. Copy the attributes. Select all other clips in the timeline. Paste attributes. Done. You will still have to render.

Highlight all the clips in your Browser
Drag them to Canvas and release them on “Overwrite with Transition”
They all appear in your timeline with dissolves on either side, or whatever you have set as the Default Transition.
You can also put them all into a timeline and they’ll do the same thing.

How do I do this in compressor?
Is it possible to do using just quicktime pro? Then I wouldnt have to render

Yes, you do still need to render all the dissolves before you can do anything else with it.

OK… let me back up…
I do not want to use Final Cut for this…. Compressor would be my first choice…
Or even better Quicktime pro, since I have already edited all the clips in FCP and they are QT movies.
Can QT Pro do a fade in fade out? Failing that how is it done in compressor?

Ok, you posted this in the Final Cut Pro Forum and your thread title is Can You Automate FCP?
I would assume you want to use FCP. FCP is the easiest way to do what you’re asking.

Perhaps Traffic from xmedit might do what you want. It’s a node based editor.

The answer to the global question that your subject line raises is yes. If you know how to script XML you can automate a lot of FCP. I used an XML script to automate the process of taking clips from the bin and laying them out in a sequence with black and slates in between. Having a 100 plus clips this saved hours of time. The field is not nearly as mature as AE scripting which has many more contributers posting code online but it is there.
As for your modified request, compressor will do what you want. Under the filters tab in the inspector you will find a fade in/out filter. You can specify duration, color, and opacity. There is a corresponding filter for audio as well.
