Try it without any extra plugins and see if that makes a difference. Plugins have been causing problems with FCP5.

Paul, no “trick” will help you anymore than burning a CD. FCP crackles and pops when it tries to play back any type of compressed audio. Burn a CD-RW, convert it to 48khz, and import it. As with all forms of copyrighted material, don’t make it avaiable to anyone else without permission from the owners.

I’ve had a great deal of problems when I have plugins installed. Whenever I have no plugins (except for the BMD ones) then everything runs well.
Plugin makers will come around and release versions that work better with FCP5. Until then, I’d only load them on an “as-needed” basis only.

His energy saver was turned off and the option to put disk drives to sleep was also off. His screensaver was set for 2 hours. So that’s definately not the cause.

I haven’t done anything but batch capture yet, but my fellow editor complained that his captures using log and capture were stopping at around 20 minutes every time – even though his out point was much further along.
I’ll tell him to check the energy saver.

Technically, there’s no such thing as an NTSC LCD monitor. LCDs cannot display interlaced video. What you would see is a line doubled image that has also been scaled to a square pixel format (720×480 would become 640×480). You’re honestly better off buying a $99 CRT television set from Walmart than buying a “pro” LCD monitor for NTSC viewing.
With HD it’s not so much of an issue, but if you want a real NTSC image you can’t use LCD.

You can use embedded sequences to achieve the same usefulness as composite clips.

Yes, but what it does is work in 4.5 and not in 5.0.

There are a lot of very confusing specs for RAM like CAS latency and other types of timing and things like that. Unless you know what those are and what a G5 is optimized for, make sure the RAM is advertised as Mac compatible.
