June 29, 2005 at 9:42 pm in reply to: Media Manger in FCP5 not deleting unused media???

People, I started a thread about this a while back and I got the same type of replies. Charlie is right. “Delete Unused Media” does not work in version 5 if the media is already offline. It doesn’t matter if the clips are made independent, even if you drag the clips to a new sequence in a new project – it doesn’t work.

And no, you did not have to make the clips independent in order to do this in version 4.5. Regardless, it doesn’t work anyways in v5.

It’s nothing special. Get female to female adapters and use regular 75ohm BNC cables. As for RS422, any 9-pin adapter or extension cable from any PC store will do.

June 23, 2005 at 7:19 pm in reply to: Media Manager Problem in Version 5

I still have the problem. But I think I figured out why nobody else has noticed it yet.

It happens when the original media is already gone. Say for example, I capture a 2 hour tape and cut a 5 minute sequence. Then, for whatever reason, the media is deleted. Now I just want to re-capture the 5 minutes, not the 2 hours. I can’t. Impossible. 100% impossible unless I want to do the Modify->Timecode and change the reel names and source TC.

Go into MM, check “delete unused media” and uncheck “include master clips” and uncheck “include affiliate clips”. Select “create offline”. It doesn’t work.

If I make the clips independent, it still doesn’t work. Let’s say I open up my sequence and select just one clip which is 3 seconds long. I ctrl-click and select make independent. Then I drag that clip into a new project. It doesn’t matter. No matter what, if I select capture it wants to capture the entire 2 hour tape. Making the sequence independent doesn’t matter either.

This is ridiculous. I’ve sent a message to Apple using the feedback forum.

June 22, 2005 at 9:16 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro and Plasma Screens

The signal will not damage your plasma. Static images will. Be careful. Personally, I’d recommend not doing it. I went to a place that did this and their $8000 plasma was ruined because the company’s slate was permanantly burned into the screen.

If the plasma only accepts video signals, then you’ll need an SDI I/O device and the HDLink from Blackmagic Design or a similar product. But this is unheard of in my experience. Every plasma I’ve seen also accepts VESA standard computer signals. If that’s the case, then it will act just like a computer monitor and internally scale it to whatever the native resolution is. So you can most likely use the Desktop Cinema View mode. But this mode has limitations. It’s not good for critical viewing and if the material has 3:2 applied to it, it won’t deinterlace properly and will definately annoy clients. I’d get the HDLink if you can.

June 21, 2005 at 10:31 pm in reply to: Clarify FCP5 audio capture.

It remembers whatever you last had it set to for that capture preset. So you shouldn’t have to do it everytime.

  • It has nothing to do with bandwidth. HD footage at H264 is very CPU intensive.

I downloaded the 720p clip for the trailer of Batman on my girlfriend’s Dell notebook that has a 2ghz Celeron, 512kb ram, and uses a generic Intel graphics chip. It played back fine. Your dual-Xeon is much more powerful than what’s needed for HD playback. There’s some sort of software incompatiblity going on in your case. Make sure you have the latest ATI drivers.

If you want to save space, encode it as Windows Media 9 HD. You can use Flip4Mac to create that on OSX.

  • Click on the green buttons to turn off the channels you don’t want.

  • You can absolutely make it work. It’s just a major grind. FCP has the “Modify->Timecode” option. With that option you can achieve anything you want. Either correct the original imported media, or alter the new media. You’ll figure it out.

June 11, 2005 at 7:40 am in reply to: Apple Uncompressed 10bit vs BM 10bit

[glennser] “am I right in thinking there still isn’t any PC version of the Apple Uncompressed 10bit?”

I’m on a PC with QTPro 6.5 right now. I don’t seen Uncompressed but I see “None”. Are you sure it doesn’t work?

Unfortunately the BMD codec is better but we’re dependant on the Apple one. You get more RT effects and generally better compatibility and speed in Final Cut. It’s even more the case in FCP5. If I use a BMD codec sequence in FCP5, I can’t even change my video processing settings anymore.
