Media Manager Problem in Version 5
Posted by Sean Oneil on June 8, 2005 at 1:00 amOk, everyone complained about MM in version 4. I never had a problem with it. Now with FCP 5, I have a serious problem.
There’s that checkbox to “Delete unused media”. It ain’t working. At all. No matter what I do, when I try to batch capture after using MM, it wants to re-capture the entire clip – not just the parts I need.

June 8, 2005 at 2:17 amJust like in v4.x, select the sequence and then select Modify/Make Sequence Clips Independent.
If that doesn’t work, drag the sequence into a new project (this makes a copy that breaks the links to the original master clips)

June 8, 2005 at 4:16 amTurn off “Include Master Clip” and the delete media will work fine. Be aware, however, that reversed clips may be clipped to a single frame in error.

June 8, 2005 at 6:43 amI’ve done this a million times in 4.5. Never had a problem. I never had to make the clips independent. I select the sequence, select MM, use the “create offline” option, check the appropriate options (select “delete unused media” and deselect “include master clips”). It just wasn’t working. I’ll try it with a different project.

June 8, 2005 at 3:52 pmWhat exactly were your settings again? I gotta try this myself, going to be media managing soon. Also if you’ve already gotten it to work could you let us know what you did? Thanks!

June 8, 2005 at 5:58 pmWhat about this.
Select all in the timeline, create a new bin, paste into the bin, select all in new bin and do the MM deal on those clips. Works for me…

June 8, 2005 at 8:39 pmI’ll play around with it more. The thing is, you absolutely should not have to create affiliate clips or independent clips to do this. The option “Delete Unused Media” is supposed to take care of this regardless.

June 20, 2005 at 3:49 pmIs this still not working for you? What kind of media are you using and how was it captured? FCP will not trim anything that does not have a TC track (like AIFF files). If you imported a bunch of movies, check to make sure they all have a proper TC track.

June 23, 2005 at 7:19 pmI still have the problem. But I think I figured out why nobody else has noticed it yet.
It happens when the original media is already gone. Say for example, I capture a 2 hour tape and cut a 5 minute sequence. Then, for whatever reason, the media is deleted. Now I just want to re-capture the 5 minutes, not the 2 hours. I can’t. Impossible. 100% impossible unless I want to do the Modify->Timecode and change the reel names and source TC.
Go into MM, check “delete unused media” and uncheck “include master clips” and uncheck “include affiliate clips”. Select “create offline”. It doesn’t work.
If I make the clips independent, it still doesn’t work. Let’s say I open up my sequence and select just one clip which is 3 seconds long. I ctrl-click and select make independent. Then I drag that clip into a new project. It doesn’t matter. No matter what, if I select capture it wants to capture the entire 2 hour tape. Making the sequence independent doesn’t matter either.
This is ridiculous. I’ve sent a message to Apple using the feedback forum.
