Same here. Exact same card and same G5. Same problem. Just discovered it today when setting up the card on a new system. I can capture but the output is a gargled signal and the deck’s VITC light keeps flashing.

Because it’d be pointless. I think FW800 a dead format. It was non-existant on the Windows side, and the only FW800 products anyone ever bought were video editors like us. The MacBook comes w/ a CardBus slot, so if you really wanted to, you could add a FW800 card. Or, you’d add something much better like a SATA card, which is why they’ve probably given up on FW800.

You shouldn’t capture it as HD. You should capture and edit in SD, then do the conversion when you’re ready to finish. Unless you have a ton of HD graphic files to work with, it doesn’t make sense to do your work in HD.
If the footage has 3:2 pulldown on it, I would suggest capturing and editing at 24p Uncompressed SD. This will make the upconversion much easier when the time comes and you won’t need a Teranex to do it. You can use Final Cut, After Effects, or any other software based scaler and get good results.

I said HE doesn’t need it. He insinusated that BMD are jerks because the new Multibridge doesn’t use PCI-X, so he should instead look to AJA for a solution. This is a ridiculous thing to say on multiple levels.
Everything AJA’s products can do, Blackmagic’s current PCI-X products can also do. You don’t need a Multibridge Extreme if AJA’s products are your base of reference. That was my point.

Gary, I understand the Varicam @ 24p uses the same pattern as 3:2 pulldown. But because it’s not interlaced it is not mixing together fields that do not match. So I wouldn’t consider it the same thing. The difference is significant because for example, you could scale it to 1080i without having to first do a reverse telecine.

I’m not sure how you are rendering at low quality. The only way to do that is to change the sequence settings to a lower framerate, etc.
To render it at full quality, just copy the contents of the sequence to another sequence that has the proper settings. Final Cut will always reference the source media, not the low-quality render files. So you don’t have to worry about it.

They actually paid for the days that they had it, so it’s no problem there. We’re not really in the rental business. A DP we work with told someone we had that deck and we rented it to them for a good deal. But we’ll definately get the HD-SDI card if we rent it out more.
I don’t quite understand how Final Cut, After Effects, or any other Quicktime app cannot convert DVCPro HD into Uncompressed HD properly and with perfectly lossless quality. And I don’t understand why the 1200A’s SDI board would do a better job.
I understand converting standard-def DV 4:1:1 to Uncompressed 4:2:2 is an issue because of the color resampling. But with DVCPro HD, this is not the case as far as I know. Maybe Gramme can chime in and explain what the deal is.

Is this Varicam?
Advanced 3:2:2:3 Pulldown is something different and is only for certain NTSC DV formats. Don’t ever use it unless you know it is advanced pulldown. Regular 3:2 pulldown must be removed using other methods.
Regardless, there isn’t ANY type of 3:2 on your footage. It’s just 24p recorded with redundant frames making it 60p.
Varicam records everything at 60p no matter what your “true” framerate is. Like the good man mentioned, use the Panasonic frame converter to make it 24p if you like. Or just edit at 60p like I do. Playback looks the same either way.

AV, give it a rest. You’re acting as if you’re entitled to have a Multibridge Extreme work on your PCI-X Mac. What you’re failing to realize is that the MAJOR difference between the Multibridge and the Multibridge Extreme is the very fact that it’s PCIe. PCIe has several advantages. It’s faster and it’s cheaper to make. So the Extreme is a new product to take advantage of it. The Extreme will work on new Macs and it allows more Windows PCs to work because very few of them ever had PCI-X slots.
Since you have a PCI-X Mac, guess what? The major advantage of the Extreme isn’t for you. You don’t really need it. You can achive the same thing by getting a Decklink HD, an HDLink, and a regular Multibridge:
