  • Dell 2405 LCD at $879, but drops frames w/FCP

Anybody run into this? The Dell 2405 is on sale again for $879, but Barefeats reported problems with dropped
frames when used with FCP, because according to Apple https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25117
you can’t have your monitor set to 60hz when used with FCP. Apparently the 2405 can only be set to 60hz when
used with a Mac. Don’t know why that is. Has anybody run into this problem with this otherwise great monitor?

I have two and have NEVER had a problem with this. 60hz is the only setting, true, but I have never had one dropped frame, and the 4 other editors I know who use FCP and the Dell have also never reported any problems.

I fail to see HOW the monitor could cause dropped frames, since it is connected to the graphics card, not the firewire connection or capture card, so it doesn’t interact with FCP directly.

Can you post the link from Barefeats? I read the Apple one and am perplexed…what monitors are they referring to? Am I one of the few that this works for? I can also capture to a firewire drive connected to my computer and the camer connected to the drive with no problems…an issue many report. I can also capture to my iBooks internal drive without dropping a frame. Am I in some sort of weird stasus bubble where things work?

It’s on the home page at barefeats.com. Barefeats is referring to the 2405, Apple just refers
    to “monitors” at 60hz.

An LCD Display doesnt really have a refresh rate, does it?
Isn’t the response time the comparable measurement to refresh rate in an LCD?
I think the article that you referd to is talking about CRT monitors.

You’re right Randy, the article is talking about CRTs. I shouldn’t have said it was *because* Apple
said that about refresh rates, but that the Apple article was referenced, but only to say that it referred to CRTs.
The barefeats report says that he has been getting readers reports of dropped frames using the 2405:

    >>>>>January 7th, 2006 (Updated) — FCP PLAYBACK PROBLEM REVEALED
Readers have reported to me a problem with skipped frames during playback with Final Cut Pro using the Dell LCD 2405FPW display. I’m told Apple warns about this in an article on their web site, but their article is speaking of CRTs which can be set to various scan rate. To my knowledge, neither the Dell, nor any other LCD display can be set to a scan rate — since they don’t scan like a normal CRT. We are trying to recreate the problem in our lab and research the issue further. Meanwhile, we wanted you to be aware of a potential “gotcha” if you planning to purchase a Dell LCD for your Power Mac running FCP.<<<<<<< [Randy Burleson] “An LCD Display doesnt really have a refresh rate, does it?

I am considering the Dell 2405 also.
So I would also like to hear if these dropped frame problems are a monitor issue or a graphics card/set up issue.
It looks like a lot of people are using the Dell 2405 with FCP with no problems.

Actually, I am debating between the Dell and the Acer AL2416Wd.
The Acer has less bells and whistles but has a response time of 6ms, compared to the Dell’s 12ms
with the same brightness and contrast ratio of the Dell.
The Acer has a DVI-D instead of a DVI-I connection but that shouldn’t really be a problem.
Just a matter of using a different cable, from what I understand.

This is all bogus rumors and misinformation. The Dell LCD does not drop frames.
